Secretary's Report
(As presented to AGM on 29/11/15)
It is my pleasure as secretary of Castletown Gaa Club to present the secretary’s report for 2015.
This is the club’s 42nd A.G.M. This year we had 5 teams compete in hurling competitions: Senior, Junior A, Junior C, U21 and Minor. It proved to be a successful year for the club at a number of grades. Our senior team competed in the Palmer Cup, the division 1a league and the senior championship. Our Junior A team competed in the division 2 league and the junior a championship. We entered a Junior C team for 2015 who competed in the division 5 league and junior c championship and this team had great success winning both the league and championship double. Both our U21 and minor teams competed in the a championships at each code and it was an historic year for our minor team who won the minor championship for the first time in 17 years.
MINORS
This year proved an historic one for our minor panel. We were joined with slieve bloom at this grade. They competed in both league and championship. The league proved to be unsuccessful as the team had three games in the group stage, winning one and losing two games which meant they failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the league. They were drawn against Abbeyleix in the quarter final of the championship and came away with a very impressive 2-15 to 0-17 points win against a much fancied abbeyleix team, who a couple of weeks earlier had won the minor league. Next up was Clough Ballacolla in the semi final. Despite a couple of early wides in the game, the team settled themselves and came through on a score line of 2-17 to 15 points, setting up a final against portlaoise who had defeated the favorites rathdowney errill in their semi final. The final was a very close affair, with both teams trading points most of the way through the first half. Portlaoise opened up a 4 point lead entering the dying stages of the second half, but our lads showed great character by making a great come back thanks to a Joe Phelan goal and a excellent point from Conor Phelan to draw the game entering added on time. Portlaoise missed a late free which meant the game finished level. The replay was much the same as the first game with both teams trading points all the way through. In the second half a goal from Conor Phelan inspired the team and an outstanding finish to the game saw them win on a score line of 1-16 to 13 points.
Great credit must go to both the team and management in the efforts that went in by all involved. The team had a mixture of county minors and some very young players who all through the championship playing some great hurling, which gives great hope for the future as this team progresses. A stat that was most impressive from the team was that they never conceded a goal in any championship game this year. Great credit also must go to the management team, who did an excellent job in preparing the team, arranging practice matches and training. This was not an easy task with both adult teams competing separately, and a lot of organizing had to go into getting the players together and I would like to thank both clubs for their help with doing this. I would like to thank the management team of Fionan Cuddy, Seamus Lyons, Joe Heffernan and Ken Holmes.
A special mention must go to Conor Phelan who was named 2015 laois minor hurler of the year and we would like to congratulate Conor on this great achievement.
U21
The u21 team received a bye in the first round of the u21 championship, and faced Na Fianna in the quarter final in o moore park in poor conditions. After a shaky start the team took control of the game winning on a score line of 3-16 to 12 points. They faced Abbeyleix Gaels in the semi final. This was a close game most of the way through. Abbeyleix scored a goal with fifteen minutes remaining and opened up a four point lead but the team responded well and finished strong to draw the game 16 points to 1-13 ensuring a replay. In the replay the team started the game very strongly. Despite playing against the wind in the first half, we took a four point lead. Abbeyleix pulled back level just before half time. In the second half, we once again opened a four point lead and like the opening half Abbeyleix came right back into the match. A last minute free put them one point ahead and despite the best efforts of the players, we couldn’t draw level and time ran out ensuring Abbeyleix won on a score line of 0-16 to 0-15. I would like to thank the management team of Paul Cuddy, Mark Delaney, Tim Drea and Enda Conroy.
JUNIOR C
The junior c team had an outstanding year in all competitions winning both the league and championship double. They competed in the ACHL Division 5 league. A strong league campaign saw them face rathdowney errill in the league semi final and a great come back late on in the game saw them win and reach the league final in which they faced borris kilcotten and in a very exciting game and won on a scoreline of 1-14 to 1-12. The team picked up in the championship where they left off in the league beating both camross and mountmellick comfortably and qualifying to face shanahoe in the final. An excellent display in the final saw them win on a score line of 1-21 to 1-10 scoring most of their scores on the day from play. This was a great achievement by all involved. Winning the double at any grade is not easy and with a mixture of some of our ‟veterans” and younger players they combined very well and had a year to remember. I would like to thank the management team of Micheal Butler, Alan Doheny, Brenden Peters and John Lyons and all who helped out along the way.
JUNIOR A
Our junior a team competed in the ACHL Division 2 league. This was a grade above their championship status and most of the teams they faced in the league were competing at a higher championship grade in 2015. Despite this, the team had a very good league campaign, finishing 4th in the league and just missed out on a place in the league semi final. The championship saw them drawn in a group of five teams with the top two teams in each group reaching the semi finals of the junior a championship. The team won three and drew one game meaning the topped the group. They faced Ballypickas in the semi final and despite been down to fourteen men for the majority of the game, the team put in a great battling performance and a very strong finish saw them win on a score line of 2-14 to 2-9. They faced Clough Ballacolla in the final. It was a thrilling game of hurling which ended with a last minute goal from a 21 yard free from Gearoid Gaughan to draw the game and send it to a replay. The replay was another cracking game of hurling which saw both teams level on a number of occasions. Clough Ballacolla then had a good patch mid way through the second half and opened up a lead but our lads battled till the very end, scoring a late goal and a point to narrow the gap to a single point but time ran out and unfortunately we lost on a score line of 3-10 to 2-14. It was a heart breaking defeat but the team fought till the very end and hopefully they will come back next year and go one step further and win the championship. I would like to thank the management team of Padraig Cuddy, Tom Jones, Patrick Mullaney and to Joe Delaney who helped out with the team during the year.
SENIOR
Unfortunately our senior team had a disappointing year in 2015. We entered the palmer cup and after receiving two walkovers in the group stage and also at the semi final stage, qualified for the final having not played a game in the competition. The club decided to pull out at this stage and concentrate on the league campaign as the competition had proved a farce to date and the club should question entering it in future years. The team had a mixed league campaign, winning three games and losing four, but to the credit of the team they were competitive in the majority of the games. We were drawn against Ballinakill in the first round of the championship and like previous years the team had a poor opening to the championship and lost out on a score line of 1-7 to 15 points. We were drawn to play abbeyleix in the second round and a great first half performance saw us take a lead at half time and were unlucky not to be further ahead as a few goal chances had somehow stayed out as luck was not with us on the day. Despite a battling performance in the second half, a late abbeyleix free saw us lose by a single point on a score line of 2-12 to 19 pionts The result was tough on the team as a number of tough refereeing decisions went against the team in the second half. This meant we were in a regulation final for the first time against the harps and the team simply did not perform at all on the day. It was a very poor performance and we ended up losing on a score line of 2-18 to 10 points. It was extremely disappointing end to the year for everyone involved as a huge effort had went in by both the players and by the management in preparing for the championship. The commitment shown by the players both the older and younger ones was excellent all through the year and it made the end outcome even tougher to take knowing the effort that had been put in. No stone was left unturned by the management team, who gave a huge commitment to the set up. It is a job everyone talks about but no one is willing to take on and I would like to especially thank Paul and Mark for the great commitment they showed to the players and the club from the start of the season. While it is disappointing to lose our senior status, a lot of very young talented hurlers were brought through at senior level. They are the future of the club and I would ask people to please row in behind this team and help them bounce back and I have no doubt that Castletown will be back at senior level in the very near future. I would like to thank the management team of Paul Cuddy and Mark Delaney. I would also like to say a big thanks to Liam Kelly our strength and conditioning coach and to both Patrick Phelan and John Lyons who also helped out during the year.
MEMBERSHIP
Our membership numbers have risen this year for the first time in a number of years. We now have 128 paid up members, between 2nd and 3rd level students and full adult members. Joe Delaney agreed at the start of the year to take over the membership set up and has done a brilliant job in increasing the numbers. The club took a tough stance on players having their membership up to date before they could play and to date all players were paid up. While non playing members have yet to receive their merchandise for 2015, the club has been busy sorting the development of the field and the merchandise will be available shortly for our 2015 members. The money gained from the membership scheme has meant we now have a field which is one of the best in the county for all our teams, both juvenile and adult to use. I would like to thank Joe Delaney for his excellent work with regard to the membership and I also would thank all our members who continue to support the club.
CLUB WEBSITE
I would once again like to thank Fionan Cuddy for his continued work regarding our club web site. It continues to be up dated regarding fixtures, results, club activities. I would encourage anyone who hasn’t viewed it already to do so at www.castletown.gaa.ie. I would also thank Fionan who runs the club twitter account and to William Delaney who updates our facebook page.
FUNDRAISING
The club held two fund raising events during the year. A golf classic was run in the mountrath golf club on the 12th of July. I would like to thank everyone who supported the event, to all the companies who gave sponsorship and to all those who played in the event. It is a great day out for anyone who plays. We also had our member’s social night on the same night in the golf club and food and music was organized that night and I thank everyone who attended. I also wish to talk Liam and Ann Phelan who did the catering at the event.
Our annual Racenight was held on the 2nd of August in The Castletown Inn. It is a very simple fund raiser for the club to run and once again I wish to thank everyone from sponsors, to people who bought horses, to those who helped out on the night and made it a great success for the club. A special word of thanks must go to Pat Delaney who did MC for us on the night and has done so for a number of years and it is greatly appreciated by the club and to Ger and his staff in the Castletown Inn for hosting the event and for his great support throughout the year to the club.
The club continues to support the parish lotto and it is a vital source of income for the club and I would ask anyone who is not already supporting it to do so in the future by buying or selling tickets on behalf of the club. I would thank all our sellers who continue to do great work by selling an excellent number of tickets each week.
CLUB DEVELOPMENT
The redevelopment of the field has now taken place and the field is now ready for use for next year. It has proven to be a huge success and is it excellent condition. The new entrance to the grounds has also been completed and now makes it both easier to access and is safer for cars entering and leaving the grounds. The car park has also been redeveloped and now can hold a much larger number of cars safely. I would like to thank James Moore for the work he did regarding the new entrance and the car park. A new mower was purchased during the year. A huge thanks must go to both Richard Poole and Tom Phelan who have spent countless hours down in the field getting the work completed, and for keeping the grass cut on the new pitch. It takes a lot of looking after to continue its development and this is not an easy job and is something that is very time consuming and they have both put in a huge effort throughout the year. I would ask people to help out with the development works as unfortunately it is left to the same people each time help is asked for.
The sports capital grant continues to support clubs and organizations around the country each year and while we received a grant of approx €5000 this year, this grant can’t be spent on the works on the grounds. As was clear to see from the clubs around us this year who received huge financial grants from this program, the money is there to be applied for. The club needs to consider meeting with the trustees and discuss what can be done to help the club apply for these grants for 2016 as it would take huge pressure of the resources of the club and we could have a top quality field and grounds to have for the young children coming up through the ranks in the club. I would also like to thank The Castletown Slieve Bloom juvenile club for their help with the redevelopment works undertaking to date.
REFEREE
I would like to thank Alan Doheny for continuing to referee within the county. It is vitally important for the club to have a referee involved and I would encourage the club to help Alan in any way they can regarding umpires for games, etc and would ask anyone who might have an interest in taking up refereeing to do so.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I would like to compliment Castletown Slieve Bloom juvenile club for their continued excellent work at underage level and congratulate them on the success they had at many levels during the year. The great work been done at this level is starting to show through at adult level with the amount of excellent young hurlers coming through each year.
I also wish to thank the following:
•Carroll Quarries who are our main sponser and have agreed to continue this sponsorship for the next two years.
• Keenan Buses would supplied buses for the club throughout the year for club activities and practice games.
• Pat Phelan who continues to raise money for the club through the tipperary gaa draw.
• Mary Hooban who continues to wash all the jerseys for the club.
• I would like to say a special thanks to our physio Harry Phelan. Harry has been brilliant for the club for the last numbers of years and has put in a huge effort to have players ready for match days and has spent long hours and late nights helping out with players who needed treatment.
• Castletown Inn. Liam and Ann phelan and Eddie Phelans for catering for teams after games during the year
• The ICA and Community hall for the use of their facilities.
• Micheal Butler for the money he secured for the club through the company he works for.
• Trumera and Kilcotten Gaa clubs for allowing us to use their facilities for both training and playing league and practice games there.
• Slieve Bloom Gaa club for also allowing us use their facilities during the year and for their continued support at minor and u21 level.
• All the companies/persons who have gave sponsorship to the club during our fundraising activities.
2016
While it was disappointing season at senior level this past year, the club had plenty of success at other levels. The club continues to see young players come through each year and this is very positive for the future. There is plenty of hope for 2016 and I have no doubt more success will come in the year ahead and I wish all the players/managements every success in the future
I wish to thank all of those involved in Castletown Gaa Club over the past year. The running of the club requires a huge amount of time and commitment by all involved. I thank the committee for their work during the year, Des Scanlon for acting as team secretary for the senior team during the season, Fionan Cuddy for his help as assistant secretary, Joe Delaney for his help throughout the year as treasurer and Chairperson Monica Delaney who does great work on the running of the club that most people don’t see and for all her help throughout the past two years.
I thank all the players who continue to play for all our teams. It takes a huge commitment and personal sacrifice year after year.
I wish to sympathize why those who have suffered bereavements through the year.
While it has been a pleasure to serve as secretary of Castletown Gaa club for the past two years, I have decided step down from the position of secretary. I once again thank all who have helped me in anyway though my term and wish the club every success in the future.

Other Events during 2015
Slieve Bloom GAA decided to enter their own hurling team for 2015 and thus the arrangement of the previous 4 years (2011,12,13 & 14) was ended.
Communication between the clubs was unclear and it necessitated several General Club meetings to discuss the issue. Eventually, a Special General Meeting on 30th January was told that Slieve Bloom had informed Laois County Board that they would be entering their own team in the JHC.
An offer from Laois County Board to mediate between both clubs was accepted by Castletown GAA, but rejected by Slieve Bloom GAA.
Both clubs expressed a wish to continue playing together at Minor & U21 level.

Castletown GAA continued as promoters in the Castletown Parish Lotto, thanks mainly to the support and enthusiasm of Fr. Hennessy P.P. This was a very important source of funds for the club.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Castletown GAA successfully applied for Sports Capital Funding to the tune of €5,000 in 2015 for equipment and playing gear. This grant was allocated for spending on non personal sports equipment. As we are neither the owner or lease holder of our grounds, and the fact that we had successfully applied for a grant of €25,000 in the 2012 round of funding, we were ineligible to apply for funding for any capital projects. The money allocated is for the purchase of non personal sports equipment only.
This money will be used for equipment upgrades, maintenance equipment etc.
