Football Challenge Game 7/3/82
Castletown V Shanahoe
From Secretary's Notes;
Castletown began the year on the field with a challenge game against Shanahoe and had a comfortable victory in a tough and sometimes dirty game played at Castletown in ideal conditions. Shanahoe opened the scoring but Ollie Donovan with 2 good goals put Castletown ahead after which the game became rough with incidents occurring regularly in various parts of the field. Officials of the clubs came together and Niall Guilfoyle of Shanahoe took over the refereeing from Jack Bergin and after warning the players the sides settled down to playing the game. Castletown played some good football and had control all through.
Castletown: Patrick Delaney, Tommy Donovan, John Bergin, Mick Cuddy, Seán Mullaney, Gerry Gaughan, Bill Delaney, P.J. Mullaney, Gerry Phelan, Mick O' Sullivan, Joe Dollard, Vinny Palmer, Ollie Donovan, Mick Peters, Francis Hegarty
Sub: Ollie Dollard.
Hurling Challenge Game 14/3/82
Castletown V Ballyfin
From Secretary's Notes;
Ballyfin Senior Hurling team came to Castletown and played the home side in their first hurling game of the year. Castletown were not impressive and were beaten and will need to show a marked improvement if they are to make an impact on this year's championship.
Junior Football League 28/3/82
Castletown 7-9 V Slieve Bloom 1-3hanahoe
From Secretary's Notes;
Castletown made a winning start to the competitive season with a rather comfortable victory over neighbours Slieve Bloomm giving us our first ever victory in Junior Football League competition and only our second ever victory in all in this code.
It was also unique in that it was played in Castletown and like our win over Ballylinan last year was by a massive margin.
The game began evenly enough and Slieve Bloom were first to score through a penalty goal by Paul Fitzpatrick but gradually Castletown began to take control and with the forwards eventually finding their scoring touch after many early misses Castletown took a 2-4 to 1-1 interval advantage.
Castletown were never troubled in the 2nd half as they added score after score and went on to win by an eight goal margin. This was a good display but against very weak opposition.
Patrick Delaney was never tested except for the penalty, the backs played soundly. Joe Dollard had a great game at midfield and the forwards had a great second half with Mick O' Sullivan outstanding both from play and placed balls.
With the Championship on in a weeks time this should give Castletown confidence and also help to maintain interest in the league.
Castletown: Patrick Delaney, Con Wall, Gerry Gaughan, Tommy Donovan, Ger Tynan, P.J. Mullaney, Seán Mullaney, Joe Dollard, Gerry Phelan, Mick O' Sullivan, Vinny Palmer, P.J. Dunne, Mick Cuddy, Paddy Hegarty, Ollie Donovan

Junior Football Championship 4/4/82
Castletown 1-10 Mountmellick 1-3
From Leinster Express
Castletown excel
Castletown, who beat Slieve Bloom in the league a week ago, scored a merited win over a fancied Mountmellick side in the their Junior Football Championship tie at Mountrath. The game had a lightening start with goals by P.J. Dunne (Castletown) and James Fitzpatrick (Mountmellick) inside four minutes. Defences tightened subsequently and each side only scored two points to half time, 1-2 each at the break.
Mountmellick re-opened with a point but the remainder of the game belonged to Castletown who added seven points without reply.
Castletown had a strong defence led by Richie Phelan, Gerry Gaughan and Seán Mullaney. They had a real star in Michael O' Sullivan who scored 0-7 while Gerry Phelan, P.J. Mullaney, Vinnie Palmer and Joe Dollard were also prominent.
James Fitzpatrick scored Mountmellick's 1-3 and goalkeeper Tom Lalor, Gerry White, Jimmy Farrell, Teddy O' Shea, Colin Murphy, A.B. White and Daithi Hayden were others to the fore in a side which lacked finish.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown advanced to the next round of the Junior Football Championship when they defeated Mountmellick by a seven point margin on a good dry day though on a wet slippery surface. This was a surprise but well deserved victory for Castletown who played the better football and outclassed their opponents in every division of the field. The first half was evenly contended ending 1-2 each.
Castletown opened the scoring through a well taken goal by P.J. Dunne but Mountmellick equalised through a penalty goal shortly after. Mountmellick took the lead through a point early in the second half but thereafter Castletown took control of the game, held their opponents scoreless and with Michael O' Sullivan deadly accurate from frees and the forwards combining well added 0-8 in the second half to run out comfortable winners.
This was a good performance. Patrick Delaney played well in goals. The backs, especially John Bergin, Richie Phelan and Gerry Gaughan defended well. P.J. Mullaney and Gerry Phelan dominated midfield and the forwards also had the better of things with all of them combining well and proving the match winners.
Castletown Team; Patrick Delaney, Con Wall, Richie Phelan, John Bergin, Seán Mullaney, Gerry Gaughan, Ger Tynan, P.J. Mullaney, Gerry Phelan, Joe Kelly, Vinny Palmer (0-1), Joe Dollard, P.J. Dunne (1-0), Ollie Dollard, Mick O' Sullivan (0-8)

Rural Minor Hurling Championship 10/4/82
Borris in Ossory 5-3 Castletown/Slieve Bloom 3-8
From Leinster Express
Last minute goal gives Borris victory
A last minute goal by Pat O' Brien gave Borris in Ossory their passage into round two of the Rural MHC when scoring a one point win over Castletown/Slieve Bloom at Ballacolla on Saturday.
In fact, Castletown/Slieve Bloom led by two points and lost time was been played when Pat O' Brien scored the winner. After an exchange of goals by O' Brien and Pat Dollard a goal by Liam Butler shot Borris ahead 2-1 to 1-3 at half time.
Borris kept in front until Pat Dollard with a goal and Michael O' Sullivan a point levelled. Two points by Joe and Paddy Dollard had Castletown/Slieve Bloom two up when Borris hit the winning goal.
Niall Fagan, Owen Coss, Pat O' Brien and Darragh Hyland were best for the winners. Joe Dollard, Michael O' Sullivan, Paul Fitzpatrick and Noel Phelan shone for the losers.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown were denied a place in the second round of the Rural M.H.C as after they had taken a lead of 2 points in the final minutes a Borris penalty with virtually the last puck of the game to give them a one point victory in a close, tough, competitive match. This was a game which Castletown, who had Joe Dollard and Michael O' Sullivan in outstanding form could have won. They never gave up trying against a strong Borris in Ossory team (Runners up in 1981 MHC) and having been 1-3 to 2-1 down at half time they kept well in contention in the second half and deservedly took a two point lead in the dying minutes but in one last effort by Borris in injury time they were awarded a penalty which gave them the narrowest of victories.
Castletown took the field without John Bergin because of an injury at work and though he lined out the second half he was only a shadow of his true self.
Castletown received a further set back when losing Paul Fitzpatrick in the last few minutes as he had been playing a great game. Nevertheless it was a good overall performance with as well as the above mentioned Joe Joe Dunne, Noel McCormack, Tom Cuddy, Francis Hegarty and Paddy Dollard being to the fore.
Castletown Team; Raymond Coss, Maurice Fitzpatrick, Paul Fitzpatrick, T.J. Young, Joe Joe Dunne, Joe Dollard (0-2), Noel Phelan, Michael O' Sullivan (0-5, 4f), Tom Cuddy, Noel McCormack, Francis Hegarty, Liam Coss (1-0), Tom Delaney, Paddy Dollard (2-1), Aidan Fitzpatrick

Junior Hurling Challenge Game 11/4/82
Castletown V Trumera
From Secretary's Notes;
Trumera defeated Castletown by a narrow margin in a Junior Hurling Challenge at Castletown. This was the Junior Team's first game of the year and they held their opponents well but lack of fitness and match practice told on them in the end.
Castletown: Seamus Bergin, Seán Brophy, Seamus O' Brien, Fint Bergin, Mick Bergin, Seán Mullaney, Joe Joe Dunne, Gerry Gaughan, Seamus Fitzpatrick, Mick Cuddy, Francis Hegarty, P.J. Dunne, Patrick Delaney (Pub), Ollie Donovan, Donie Doheny.

Castletown 1-8 Timahoe 1-1
From Leinster Express
Castletown show good form
Castletown were never really troubled by Timahoe in this Junior Football Championship tie at Portlaoise, on Saturday evening last. Indeed were it not for some poor shooting by the victors frontline, they would have been even more comfortable winners.
Castletown full forward Dollard opened his team's account after just four minutes with a fine point from play. Just three minutes later corner forward O' Sullivan rattled the net with a rocket like shot that gave Jim Buggy no chance in the Timahoe goal. This was after a nice inter passing movement that involved four Castletown men.
The winners led at half time by 1-4 to no score. However having had the aid of a strong breeze they should have been further ahead at this stage.
Timahoe fought back and were rewarded with a goal. It came as a result of a direct ball into the Castletown square and when it appeared to be going wide, Dalton, who had come on as a substitute fisted it over his head whilst the ball was in transit and looked as though it would go wide. However they flattered to deceive and Castletown finished the stronger side.
At that point the score was 1-7 to 1-1 in favour of Castletown. O' Sullivan raised another white flag in the 27th minute but it was only of academic interest.
Best for Castletown were Seamus O' Brien in goals, Phelan at full back and Gaughan at centre back. The Mullaneys at midfield and in attack the Dollards and O' Sullivan.
Best for Timahoe were McEvoy at full back, Bowe at centre back and W Ramsbottom at midfield.
From Secretary's Notes
This was the first time Castletown had ever won a 2nd Round Championship game in football and their first time winning 3 consecutive competitive games in football. Patrick Delaney went off injured with Seán Mullaney dropping back to corner back and Gerry Phelan coming on at midfield.
Castletown Team; Seamus O' Brien, Con Wall, Richie Phelan, Patrick Delaney, Ger Tynan, Gerry Gaughan (0-2, 45m), Tommy Donovan, P.J. Mullaney, Seán Mullaney, P.J. Dunne, Joe Dollard (0-1), Vinny Palmer, Mick Cuddy, Ollie Dollard (0-2), Mick O' Sullivan (1-3)

Junior Football League 21/4/82
Mountrath 1-9 Castletown 0-5
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown's unbeaten run in Junior Football came to an abrupt end when beaten by a seven point margin by a fitter and more skillful Mountrath team in the 2nd round of the Junior Football League. This game was originally scheduled for Borris in Ossory but changed to Mountrath by agreement and Mountrath were always that bit ahead of a Castletown team which was short 6 regulars due to work and the proximity of the S.H.C. Mountrath opened the scoring and were never never lead and by half time were 0-4 to 0-1 ahead after a half in which Castletown had squandered many chances. Mountrath added another 5 points in the second half to Castletown's four and not long after Michael O' Sullivan (who was Castletown's best player) had a great shot superbly saved by the Mountrath keeper, Mountrath moved up the field and scored a good goal which clinched the league points for the town team. This was a game which brought Castletown "down to earth" after many victories but doesn't rule out our qualification chances- which still hinge on a victory over Borris in Ossory in a weeks time. There were some good performances- notably O' Sullivan who time after time had the town defence in panic but he lacked support. The back line and midfield played reasonably well with Tommy Donovan very impressive in the second half and Seamus O' Brien very reliable in goals.
Castletown Team; Seamus O' Brien, Larry Dunne, Gerry Gaughan, Ollie Donovan, Ger Tynan, Seán Mullaney, Tommy Donovan, P.J. Mullaney, Joe Dollard, P.J. Dunne, Vinny Palmer, Mick O' Sullivan, Patrick Delaney, Mick Peters, Francis Hegarty

Senior Hurling Championship 25/4/82
Castletown 2-6 Ballacolla 0-8
From Leinster Express
Castletown Hold Out
Two first half goals from Conleth Wall and Michael O' Sullivan and a fine all round display in the opening half were chief factors in Castletown's four point win over Ballacolla in the Senior Hurling Championship at Borris in Ossory.
As the game progressed it became evident it was well for Castletown that they opened on such a high note and led 0-5 to 0-1 after 20 minutes for they only managed one point afterwards and were sorely pressed by a Ballacolla side who were much too dependent on Pat O' Neill in the scoring area.
After an even and scoreless third quarter Conleth Wall pointed for Castletown but Pat O' Neill replied with three for Ballacolla who just could not find a way through the Castletown defence led by goalkeeper Charlie Palmer, Mick Peters, Pat Hegarty and county minor panelists John Bergin and Joe Dollard.
In fact the minor county selectors must have been pleased with the other two county panelists Michael O' Sullivan who had a fine game in the Castletown attack and Ray Broderick at midfield for Ballacolla.
Gerry Phelan and P.J. Mullaney gave Castletown a decided pull at midfield, especially in the opening half, and Con Wall, Vinny Palmer and Oliver Dollard also did well.
Ballacolla owe most to goalkeeper Dick Cashin, Pat Kavanagh, Ned Ryan, Liam Whelan, Mick Aherne, Ray Broderick, outstanding Pat O' Neill who scored all but a point of his sides total.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown repeated their 1981 success over Ballacolla at the same venue and earned a valuable and morale boosting two points in their first SHC game of the year. Castletown's victory was due mainly to a super start in the first half with a high lob from Con Wall going all the way to the net in the first minute, a point each from Joe and Oliver Dollard and a goal and a point from Mick O' Sullivan all inside the first ten minutes.
Ballacolla blazed a penalty over the bar late on.
Mick Dollard was sent off late in the game.
Joe Dollard at centre back was outstanding, along with his wing backs Paddy Hegarty and Seamie Hyland.
The forwards, apart from the opening ten minutes, did not have the best of times. Mick O' Sullivan was making his Senior "outfield" debut.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, John Bergin, Mick Peters, Mick Dollard, Paddy Hegarty, Joe Dollard (0-1), Seamie Hyland, P.J. Mullaney, Gerry Phelan, Vinny Palmer, Con Wall (1-2, 1f), Mick O' Sullivan (1-2), Paul Dollard, Oliver Dollard (0-1), Jimmy Hanlon

Castletown w/o Borris in Ossory scr
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown received a walkover in this game as Borris in Ossory were eliminated from the competition for failing to field a team against Slieve Bloom the previous Sunday.
Castletown now have 4 points and a win over Cullohill in the last game would leave them level with Mountrath at the top of the group.
Senior Hurling Championship 9/5/82
Castletown 3-9 Abbeyleix 2-10
From Leinster Express
Two-point win for Castletown
Castletown collected their second brace of points in the SHC at Mountrath on Sunday when beating Abbeyleix by a two point margin 3-9 to 2-10 after a fast lively game which produced many passages of top class hurling and a very exciting finish. Abbeyleix were rather unfortunate to be reduced to fourteen men near the finish when they had a player sent off following an incident.
Castletown were favoured by a slight breeze at the start and got away to a great start when Jimmy Hanlon had the ball in the Abbeyleix net for a goal after two minutes. Eugene Hearns pointed an Abbeyleix free in the fourth minute but this was offset when Paul Dollard replied for Castletown a minute later.
Christy Dunphy shot Abbeyleix's second point in the seventh minute and they took the lead three minutes later when Eugene Hearns finished a Fint Delaney centre to the net for a good goal. Castletown now took control with P.J. Mullaney, Joe Dollard from a sixty five and Paul Dollard shooting a point each followed by a Oliver Dollard goal. Abbeyleix replied with a point by Eugene Fennelly in the twentieth minute. Joe Dollard then placed a 65 to Paul Dollard for a point, with Con Wall and Oliver Dollard sharing a brace of points leaving the half time score 2-7 to 1-3.
Abbeyleix were on top on the restart and had six points in a row from Christy Dunphy, Brian Fitzgerald, Eugene Fennelly, Christy Dunphy, Richard McHugh and Christy Dunphy in that order before Con Wall gained possession following the puck out and slammed the ball to the net and Castletown were now two points up with ten minutes to go.
Castletown who beat Ballacolla in their opening game of the competition had a very reliable goalie in Charlie Palmer and he got great cover from Mick Peters, Mick Dollard and John Bergin in a solid full back line. Joe Dollard was outstanding at centre half back and he got good support from Mick Boyhan on his right. P.J. Mullaney and Pat Hegarty were in control at midfield for most of the first half and had the edge in the closing minutes. Con Wall, Oliver Dollard and Jimmy Hanlon were the most prominent in an attack in which 5 of the 6 forwards scored.
Abbeyleix had an outstanding goalie in Kevin Fennelly and he got good support from Willie Phelan, Mog Fitzpatrick, Johnnie Phelan and Jim Ring in defence. Eugene Fennelly had a good first half at midfield but faded in the closing period. Brian Fitzgerald also had his moments at midfield while Christy Dunphy, Eugene Hearns and Christy Ring took the honours in attack.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown earned themselves another pair of SHC points with a good though narrow victory over a tough, fast and fit Abbeyleix team in an exciting game. Castletown fielding the same team as played against Ballacolla except for the injured Michael O' Sullivan opened the scoring with a Jimmy Hanlon goal after a few early bursts. This was followed shortly by an Abbeyleix point and Paul Dollard replied with a similar score but then two Abbeyleix attacks brought a goal and a point which gave them the lead for the first and only time in the opening half. Castletown went on a scoring spree from then till half time scoring 6 points and an opportunist goal, with Oliver Dollard blocking down the Abbeyleix goalie's attempted clearance and the ball going into the net while Abbeyleix added one point leaving it 2-7 to 1-3 at the break.
Abbeyleix, now assisted by the wind, had six points scored before Con Wall opened the 2nd half account with a point. An Abbeyleix goal followed which gave them the lead and it looked as if they would take over the game but shortly afterwards Con Wall got possession inside his marker and cooly shot to the net. This was a vital score and it boosted Castletown's downward sliding morale as they held grimly and bravely to that 2 point margin to the end.
This was a game in which every player played his part and yet none were particularly outstanding. Cha Palmer could not be faulted, the backs though sometimes uncertain had good moments with Joe Dollard and Seamie Hyland in top form. P.J. Mullaney had a good hour at midfield, the forwards had good spells and got the necessary scores and Paddy Hegarty had a very good game in various positions. Despite this victory there is room for improvement especially in fitness.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, John Bergin, Mick Peters, Mick Dollard, Mick Boyhan, Joe Dollard (0-1), Seamie Hyland, P.J. Mullaney (0-1), Paddy Hegarty, Vinny Palmer, Con Wall (1-2), Gerry Phelan (0-1), Paul Dollard (0-2), Oliver Dollard (1-2), Jimmy Hanlon (1-0)

Castletown V Kinnitty
From Secretary's Notes;
A Castletown squad travelled to Kinnitty for a hurling challenge with the Offaly 1981 County Champions and had a merited victory in a good sporting game. Both sides were below full strength but yet Castletown gave a good performance and had about 6 points to spare at the end. Castletown lined out without Con Wall and Joe Dollard (at county training), Jimmy Hanlon and Mick O' Sullivan (injured), Gerry Phelan (exams) and Vinny Palmer but their replacements Francis Hegarty, Bernie O' Keefe, Pat Phelan, Charlie Phelan, P.J. Dunne and Gerry Gaughan all played well as did the other regulars.

From Leinster Express
Castletown/Slieve Bloom best in first round
Castletown/Slieve Bloom the Castletown backboned side with 5 Slieve Bloom players in strong support proved just too strong for the Mountrath/Trumera/Ballyfin selection in their first round Laois Under 21 hurling championship tie at Mountrath.
Gerry Phelan, Michael O' Sullivan and Michael Delaney shone in the winner's attack. The game was marked by the fine individual performances of P.J. Mullaney of Castletown and Declan Carroll of Mountrath. The latter gave an excellent performance and scored 2-3 of his side's total.
Others prominent for the losers, who had seven players from Mountrath, five from Ballyfin and three from Trumera were Paul Tobin, John Dowling, Dan Donovan, Willie Byrne, John Delaney, Gus Lanham and John Byrne.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown-Slieve Bloom qualified for the second round of the U21 HC with a 4 point win over a Mountrath Ballyfin Trumera combination played by agreement at Mountrath on Saturday May 15th instead of at Borris in Ossory on Sunday May 16th. Castletown with 6 seniors on their side seemed to be coasting to victory when by half time they were ahead 2-10 to 1-1. Castletown started badly having 6 wides in a row but once they found the scoring touch they added point after point and 2 well taken goals by Benny Conroy and Michael Delaney gave them a comfortable lead by half time.
However, Castletown seemed to rest on their oars and only scored 4 points in the second half while Mountrath got 3 soft goals and 3 points to put them into contention but Castletown always seemed to have that bit in reserve and held out.
Despite this victory it wasn't a great performance with many players not seeming to be making a great effort. The half back line of the two Hegartys and Tom Cuddy played well. P.J. Mullaney dominated midfield while the forwards had a good first half but made little impression in the second.
Castletown Team; Edmund Dunne, Paul Fitzpatrick, John Bergin, Noel Phelan, Francis Hegarty, Paddy Hegarty, Tom Cuddy, Joe Dollard (0-1), P.J. Mullaney, Mick O' Sullivan (0-5, 2f), Gerry Phelan (0-5, 1f), Gerry Gaughan (0-1), Michael Delaney (1-1), Benny Conroy (1-0), Mick Cuddy

Kinnitty 5-11 Castletown 3-9
From Secretary's Notes;
This challenge match came to a premature end when referee Seamus Fitzpatrick unfortunately had to call the game to a halt after an incident late in the 2nd half at which stage Kinnitty led by 8 points 5-11 to 3-9. Castletown started badly and conceded 2 goals in the early minutes and though they steadied they were 1-6 to 4-8 behind at half time. Castletown, who lined out short seven of last weeks championship side improved in the 2nd half and came to within a goal of the Offaly Champions but Kinnitty went further ahead and were that 8 points to the good when the game was abandoned after some fighting near the Castletown goalmouth.

Castletown and Mountrath topped the group and would need to play off to decide who goes through.
Junior Hurling League 22/5/82
Castletown 6-4 Camross 2-2
From Secretary's Notes;
Castletown Junior Hurlers played their first competitive game of the season and had a comfortable win over Camross in soggy conditions at Mountrath. Despite conceding an early goal Castletown had the better of the exchanges all through and led 3-3 to 1-1 at half time thanks to goals from P.J. Dunne and Tommy Donovan. Camross scored a goal and a point in an early second half comeback attempt but Castletown settled down and with goals from Donovan and Dunne, who was top scorer with 4-2 to his credit, they were never in danger. Though a great improvement is necessary if Castletown are to advance, this was a creditable performance for a first outing with Seamus Bergin giving a good display in goals, the defence giving little away, Francis Hegarty and Gerry Gaughan dominating midfield and the forwards combining to get the necessary scores with P.J. Dunne outstanding.
Castletown: Seamus Bergin, Fint Bergin, Tom Coughlan, Martin Bergin, Seán Mullaney, Ollie Donovan, Ger Tynan, Francis Hegarty, Gerry Gaughan (0-1), Seamus Fitzpatrick (0-1), Tommy Donovan (2-0), P.J. Dunne (4-3), Vivian Cahill, Mick Bergin, Pat Phelan (0-1)

Park Ratheniska 4-7 Castletown 0-8
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown's hopes of qualifying for the closing stages of the SHC suffered a severe setback when they were well and truly beaten by a faster, stronger Ratheniska side. Castletown's morale might have been affected by the loss of Gerry Phelan through injury, Michael O' Sullivan through illness and Seamie Hyland's non appearance. Gerry Phelan suffered a serious Achilles Tendon injury V Kinnity last Sunday, ruling him out for the year and possibly beyond. Having played against the wind they were still in contention at half time 0-4 to 2-3 behind. The two goals came from long distance shots that should have been dealt with.
Castletown, with at least an equal share of the play couldn't get the goal they so desperately needed and instead the green and gold had two more soft goals within a short spell to completely shatter Castletown. Ratheniska ran out comfortable winners in a game which Castletown will want to forget. Joe Dollard had an outstanding game for Castletown at centre back. Cha Palmer had an unusually unhappy hour in goals. Joe Phelan, a half time substitute, was sent off along with his Ratheniska opponent.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, Tom Palmer, Mick Peters, Mick Dollard, Mick Boyhan, Joe Dollard, John Bergin, P.J. Mullaney, Vinny Palmer (0-2), Con Wall (0-4, 3f), Paddy Hegarty, Bernie O' Keefe, Paul Dollard (0-1), Oliver Dollard (0-1), Jimmy Hanlon

Castletown too strong for Shanahoe
Winners over Mountmellick and Timahoe, Castletown proved too strong for Shanahoe in their Laois Junior Football Championship tie at Borris in Ossory.
Castletown who led all through were well served by Joe Dollard, Charlie Phelan, P.J. Mullaney, Gerry Gaughan, Seán Mullaney and John Bergin while men like Charlie Kirwan, Pat Bowe, Lar Malone and Billy Cuddy tried hard for Shanahoe.
Castletown now meet Kilcotton or Durrow in the quarter final.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown qualified for the quarter final of the Junior Football Championship with a rather comfortable victory over Shanahoe in an unexciting game. Castletown opened the scoring with a Pat Delaney point and added two goals through P.J. Dunne and Joe Dollard before Shanahoe had their first and only score of the match - a well worked goal. These were the only scores of the first half which left Castletown, despite superiority all through the field with a slender 2-1 to 1-0 advantage at half time. On the resumption however Castletown turned superiority into scores and were never in trouble especially after Shanahoe failed to convert an early second half penalty and went on to win by a 19 point margin. Seamus O' Brien wasn't tested in goals, John Bergin was the star of an under-worked defence, P.J. Mullaney and Gerry Gaughan dominated midfield while in an attack which played reasonably well Joe Dollard was the star.

Durrow/Cullohill 4-9 Castletown/Slieve Bloom 1-8
From Leinster Express
Durrow/Cullohill Win
Durrow/Cullohill had few problems in this U21 match at Ballacolla on Sunday last. In what was a fiercely contested match with first time hurling and no time for fancy fare the winners sealed their victory in the latter stages of the second half.
Durrow/Cullohill led by three points after ten minutes play before the losers had a point on the board. Then Castletown/Slieve Bloom had three points on the trot before John Fitzpatrick goaled for the winners. Points from Seán Murphy and Nicholas Brophy gave them a lead at the interval 1-5 to 0-4.
Best for the winners were Liam Spencer, Martin Bergin, Pat White in defence. Joe Dunne was sound at midfield. In attack, Seán Murphy, Nick Brophy and Justin Whelan were prominent.
For the losers, Joe Dollard was excellent at centre back along with P.J. Mullaney, Mick O' Sullivan and Benny Conroy.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown-Slieve Bloom were beaten by a stronger and better all round team but the 10 point winning margin was flattering over a gallant determined team in the quarter final of the U21 HC. Castletown, who lined out without Ed Dunne and Francis Hegarty from the last round, found themselves 1-3 down before scoring. Paddy Hegarty and Joe Dollard were excellent on the half back line and the team began to recover being only four points behind at the break, 1-5 to 0-4.
The 2nd half was also very keenly contested with some good hurling and first time pulling. A goal from Michael O' Sullivan from a free brought Castletown to within a point but the opposition fought back and goaled shortly afterwards. Castletown battled on but two more goals saw the margin stretched to 10 points at the end of a game where every player gave of his best.
Castletown Team; Paddy Dollard, Paul Fitzpatrick, John Bergin, Noel Phelan, Paddy Hegarty, Joe Dollard (0-5, 4f), Dermot O' Brien, P.J. Mullaney (0-1), Gerry Gaughan, Tom Cuddy, Benny Conroy, Vivian Cahill, Mick O' Sullivan (1-2f), Mick Cuddy, Michael Delaney

From Leinster Express
Shanahoe's easy win
Shanahoe, beaten in the first round last year, showed their best form since reforming two years ago when they easily defeated Castletown at Rathdowney on Saturday evening in the Laois JHC.
Shanahoe opened the scoring and led all the way. At the interval they had established an unassailable lead 2-8 to 0-5.
The second half followed a similar pattern with Shanahoe adding 1-6 to Castletown's 0-2. Shanahoe now meet Portlaoise and on this form could well reach the semi final for the first time in many years.
They had fine players in S Jacobs (0-4), P Kirk (2-0), S O' Neill (1-8), Fint Cuddy (0-2). Goalie Martin Cuddy had a fine hour, along with Martin Breen and Charlie Kirwan.
For Castletown, Fint Bergin, Ollie Donovan, Seán Mullaney, Gerry Gaughan, Francis Hegarty, Vivian Cahill, Pat Phelan (0-3), Mick Cuddy (0-1) and Seamus Fitzpatrick (0-1) were best.

Clear cut win for Shanahoe
Shanahoe qualified to meet Portlaoise in a Laois Junior Hurling Championship quarter final when scoring an easy win over Castletown at Rathdowney. Shanahoe with Seamus Jacob prominent at midfield were quickly into their stride and with Pat Kirk, Seán O' Neill and Fint Cuddy in fine scoring form they led 2-8 to 0-5 at half time.
Goalkeeper Martin Cuddy, Martin Breen, Charlie Kirwan and Denis Lalor were others to shine for Shanahoe who added 1-6 to Castletown's 0-2 in the second half.
Fint Bergin, Ollie Donovan, Seán Mullaney, Gerry Gaughan, Francis Hegarty, Vivian Cahill and Pat Phelan were best for Castletown.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown fell at the first hurdle to a fitter team. This was a disappointing result having beaten the same opposition in last years league.
Castletown Team; Seamus Bergin, Seamus O' Brien, Tom Coughlan, Marty Bergin, Seán Mullaney, Ollie Donovan, Fint Bergin, Francis Hegarty, Gerry Gaughan, Seamus Fitzpatrick (0-1), Tommy Donovan, Pat Phelan (0-5f), Mick Cuddy (0-1), Eamon Hanlon, Vivian Cahill

Cullohill 1-11 Castletown 1-6
From Leinster Express
Great second half display by Cullohill
A great second half display in which they turned a five point interval deficit into a five point winning margin saw Cullohill collect their second brace of Laois Senior Hurling Championship points beating Castletown at Ballacolla. A quiet first half belonged to two players Conleth Wall, who scored 1-4, all but a point of the Castletown score and Pat Bolger who had Cullohill's three points - two in the closing minutes to narrow the gap to 1-5 to 0-3 at the break.
Conleth Wall opened with a goal from a third minute free and after he figured in an exchange of point with Pat Bolger he added three more before Michael O' Sullivan pointed.
On resuming Cullohill switched their attack completely around and moved Liam Spencer from defence with Lar Whelan moving back to his more familiar half back role.
They later called in Pat White and a second John Delahunty, yet the switches may not have paid off but for the brilliance of Paddy O' Mahonh the former county centre back who scored six points in a row, his fifth levelling the scores at 0-9 to 1-6 with five minutes to go. A centre by Mick Bolger was finished by John Collier for the winning goal and O' Mahony and midfielder John Delahunty added the two insurance points as both Charlie Palmer and Andy Doran at the other end affected great saves.
Apart from O' Mahony and goalkeeper Doran, Cullohill owe most to John Dunphy, Ger Loughman, Mick Bolger and Joe Dunne. John Delahunty, John Collier, Liam Spencer and Pat Bolger.
Mick Peters, half backs Joe Dollard, Seamie Hyland, Pat Hegarty, P.J. Mullaney, Conleth Wall, Mick O' Sullivan, and Vinny Palmer who moved to midfield in the second half were best for Castletown.
From Laois Nationalist
Castletown faded badly
Both these sides were out to prove that their form on their last Laois SHC outings were all wrong on Sunday.
Cullohill suffered a twelve point defeat at the hands of Camross and Castletown had been humiliated by Ratheniska to the tune of fifteen points.
On Sunday they divided the halves, Castletown took the laurels in the first half and the break led 1-5 to 0-3 and seemed to be coasting. But to the amazement of their followers they only added one more point in the second half and allowed Cullohill to completely dictate matters. A John Collier goal in the twelfth minute turned the game around. This gave Cullohill a three point lead and they now added two further points to run out convincing winners on the score 1-11 to 1-6.
Cullohill owe much to veteran centre back Paddy O' Mahony for this fine comeback, apart from playing a fine game at centre back he contributed well to the scoring. They had other fine players in J Dunphy, Andy Doran, Mick Bolger, Liam Spencer and John Collier were best in attack.
For Castletown, who now have lost four points Seamus Hyland, Mick Peters, Joe Dollard, P.J. Mullaney, Con Wall, Mick O' Sullivan and Vinny Palmer tried hardest.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown suffered their second successive defeat in the SHC. Having led for most of the game they were overtaken by Cullohill and once overtaken could not recover and were 5 points behind at the end.
This was another disappointing performance from Castletown who should have won this game after getting off to a fine start with Con Wall scoring 1-1. Castletown, aided by a fairly strong breeze, added 4 more points, mainly from frees, but had several wides. This left them in a half time lead of 1-5 to 0-3.
In the second half Cullohill started to dictate and scored 2 points before Jimmy Hanlon replied with a point which turned out to be Castletown's only score of the 2nd half. Cullohill gradually pulled back this deficit, levelled and then goaled to go ahead for the first time and while Castletown had their chances they didn't score while Cullohill added 2 further points to win 1-11 to 1-6.
Joe Dollard was once again the Castletown star at centre back being outstanding all through. His fellow defenders played reasonably well while midfield won a good share of possession but the forwards made little impression, especially in the 2nd half. So once again, as in former years, Castletown after a good start in the Championship, faded away and now with only 4 points, and 3 games to play will find it difficult to qualify.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, John Bergin, Mick Peters, Mick Dollard, Paddy Hegarty, Joe Dollard, P.J. Mullaney, Bernie O' Keefe, Vinny Palmer, Con Wall (1-4), Mick O' Sullivan (0-1), Paul Dollard, Oliver Dollard, Jimmy Hanlon (0-1)

Castletown 4-10 Durrow 1-9
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown, despite a three week period without training and a total lack of preparation had a very convincing win over Durrow and so returned to winning ways earning 2 points on the Championship table which keeps them in contention for a place in the quarter final.
Castletown played with great spirit, especially in the 2nd half after they were reduced to 14 men when John Bergin was sent off. At this stage Castletown were a point behind but instead of becoming demoralised they began to hurl to their best form and went on to win by 10 points. In an even first half which ended 0-5 to 0-4 Castletown had played reasonably well and were never headed. A goal by Durrow early in the 2nd half which gave them the lead seemed as if it might herald another 2nd half fall away by Castletown but this did not happen as Castletown fought back with the defence played very soundly, the midfield controlling their area and the forwards finding their form at last. This was a good team victory but Joe Dollard was again outstanding at centre back and Vinny Palmer had a great game at midfield, while Paul Dollard was the best forward.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, Mick Boyhan, Mick Peters, Bernie Ferns, John Bergin, Joe Dollard (0-3, 2f), Seamie Hyland, Vinny Palmer (0-2), P.J. Mullaney (0-1), Bernie O' Keefe, Con Wall (1-1f), Mick O' Sullivan (1-0), Paul Dollard (2-1), Oliver Dollard (0-2), P.J. Dunne

Junior Hurling League 3/6/82
Mountrath 4-12 Castletown 0-3
From Leinster Express;
Mountrath qualified to meet Trumera in a quarter final of the Laois Junior Hurling league when beating Castletown by a wide margin at Ballacolla. The winners led 2-2 to 0-3 at the interval but had matters much their own way in the second period with Mick Tobin, Willie Byrne, Patsy O' Rourke, Mick Gorman, Paul Tobin, Declan Carroll and Pat Lanigan very prominent.
Goalkeeper Mick Bergin, John Bergin, Ollie Donovan, Gerry Gaughan and Seamus Fitzpatrick were best for Castletown.
From Secretary's Notes;
Castletown suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Mountrath and thus made their exit from the Junior Hurling league for 1982. Castletown were still in contention at half time being 0-3 to 2-2 down but Mountrath scored a goal immediately on the restart and thereafter cruised to a well merited and easy victory in ideal conditions and qualified for the quarter final against Trumera. Castletown played the last quarter without Fint Bergin who was sent off. Seamus Bergin could not be blamed in goals. Jack Bergin was very sound at full back. Gerry Gaughan also played well but Castletown lacked in most sectors of the field.
Castletown: Seamus Bergin, Michael Bergin, Jack Bergin, Seamus O' Brien, Seán Mullaney, Ollie Donovan, Fint Bergin, Gerry Gaughan, Tommy Donovan, Paddy Dollard, Seamus Fitzpatrick (0-3), Vivian Cahill, Patrick Delaney, Mick Cuddy, Ger Finlay

Castletown 2-12 Drom & Inch (Tipperary) 1-8
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown had a well deserved win in their first round game of the Rathdowney Tournament on their first entry into that competition.
Castletown played well and especially towards the end having led by one point at half time, 2-3 to 0-8. They dominated the second half scoring 9 good points to the Tipp side's goal. This was a good overall performance by Castletown with County panelists Vinny Palmer and Joe Dollard outstanding (playing despite a directive from County trainers not to) and Michael O' Sullivan deadly accurate from frees and play with a tally of 0-8, but all the rest played their parts in the victory also.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, Mick Boyhan, Mick Peters, Bernie Ferns, Paddy Hegarty, Joe Dollard (0-1), Seamie Hyland, Vinny Palmer (0-1), P.J. Mullaney (0-1), Bernie O' Keefe, Oliver Dollard (1-0), Mick O' Sullivan (0-8, 5f), Charlie Phelan (1-0), Paul Dollard, P.J. Dunne (0-1)

Castletown-Slieve Bloom 4-11 Portlaoise 2-3
From Secretary's Notes;
Mountrath was the venue as the Castletown-Slieve Bloom combination had a very convincing win over a physically bigger Portlaoise side in the first round of the Minor Hurling Championship. The more skillful Castletown side led all the way and were 2-5 to 1-2 up at the half way stage. They were never in trouble in the second half as Michael O' Sullivan in moving to the full forward line scored 2-3 out of a second half total of 2-6. Portlaoise scored 1-1. This was a good Castletown performance on their first outing of the year. John Bergin was very reliable at full back while Joe Joe Dunne also had a good game in the corner. The half back line played very well with Joe Dollard as usual outstanding. Francis Hegarty and Tom Cuddy dominated midfield. Paddy Dollard had a great game and Michael O' Sullivan also played very well.

Clonad win but Ref. says it's a draw
Two points by George Lanham in the last five minutes gave Clonad their winning margin in this very exciting Laois Senior Hurling Championship tie at Mountrath on Sunday and it came as a surprise when referee, Mr. Patsy Sydes, announced the result as a draw, Clonad 4-7, Castletown 1-16. By our reckoning Clonad scored 4-8 and Castletown 1-15. His announcement was hotly questioned by Clonad players, officials and supporters.
Castletown were first to score and were three points ahead until the 23rd minute when Clonad scored two points in quick succession to take the lead for the first time. Castletown replied with two points before the break when Clonad led 2-4 to 0-9.
The sides were level, Clonad 2-6, Castletown 0-12 after 45 minutes before Castletown again went a goal and three points in front with seven minutes remaining. Clonad narrowed the gap to three points when a 21 yard free was lashed to the net.
Mick Doran equalised when he gained possession, and after putting in a great solo booted the ball to the net for a great goal. Con Wall then failed from a Castletown penalty, and Clonad took the lead with a George Lanham point and the same player added another from eighty yards in the dying seconds to complete what to our reckoning was a two point winning margin, 4-8 to 1-15.
Goalie Richie Lyons along with Paddy Bergin, Paddy Ging and Anthony Fogarty were the pick of a very solid Clonad defence. At midfield George Lanham was outstanding and contributed 2-6 of the Clonad total. Mick Doran, Liam Harney and Gerry Kavanagh contributed the balance of the Clonad scores in an attack that was not very impressive.
Castletown had a most reliable full back in Mick Peters who got most support from centre half back Joe Dollard who was outstanding. John Bergin, Pat Hegarty also. Vinny Palmer was outstanding at midfield with Con Wall, Oliver Dollard and Paul Dollard the most prominent among the forwards.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown were defeated by Clonad, though according to the referee the teams finished level.
The first half ended 0-9 to 2-4 with Castletown one point behind despite having the better of the exchanges throughout the field. Castletown scored some good points but all the good work was counteracted as Clonad were let through for 2 goals towards the end of the first half.
Castletown took the lead in the 2nd half in the sweltering heat and went 4 points up when Oliver Dollard had a good goal with about 10 minutes to go but Clonad had two goals in succession shortly after, Castletown had their chance to regain the lead when Con Wall had a penalty in the dying moments but his shot was stopped and Clonad were 2 points to the good at the full time whistle.
This was a game Castletown needed to win and should have won. The forwards built up a good score in 1-15 but should have scored more due to a good supply of ball from midfield. The defence was porous conceding soft goals by letting forwards through easily.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, Mick Boyhan, Mick Peters, John Bergin, Paddy Hegarty, Joe Dollard (0-3f), Seamie Hyland, P.J. Mullaney, Vinny Palmer (0-2), Bernie O' Keefe (0-1), Oliver Dollard (1-1), Mick O' Sullivan (0-1), Con Wall (0-6, 5f), Paul Dollard (0-1), Joe Phelan

Galmoy (Kilkenny) 3-12 Castletown 0-16
From Secretary's Notes
Having beaten Drom & Inch in the first round, Castletown went out of the Rathdowney S.H. Tournament losing to a more skillful Galmoy team despite the fact that they played some good hurling. Castletown started well with the forwards scoring good points but the Kilkenny side had 2 goals to negate these and were ahead 2-6 to 0-10 at half time. In a good second half Galmoy had an early goal while Castletown scored 0-6 and so did Galmoy. The Kilkenny side ran out five point winners. Castletown's cause was not helped when John Bergin was sent off towards the end.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, John Bergin, Mick Peters, Mick Boyhan, Paddy Hegarty, Joe Dollard (0-1, 65), Seamie Hyland, Vinny Palmer, P.J. Mullaney, Bernie O' Keefe (0-2), Con Wall (0-6), Mick O' Sullivan (0-3), Jimmy Hanlon (0-1), Oliver Dollard (0-3), Joe Phelan

Strong finish by Camross puts paid to Castletown
Camross had a narrow but deserved win over Castletown in the S.H.C. tie which was played at Borris in Ossory on Saturday evening last. Castletown started very well indeed when P.J. Mullaney had a goal inside two minutes.
Fint Scully replied for Camross with a point but then Castletown had four four points on the trot, from Con Wall, Mick O' Sullivan and Vinny Palmer (2). Joe Phelan then rattled the net with a goal from play which was followed by a Frank Keenan point from a free to leave Castletown leading by double scores at 2-4 to 1-2 after fifteen minutes,
Vinnie Palmer then had two points which was followed by a similar score from Joe Dollard, while Tommy Delaney also raised a white flag for the visitors to leave Castletown ahead at the short whistle by 2-7 to 1-3.
On the resumption Joe Dollard pointed a "65" for the losers but then Camross struck. Two goals, one from play, by Frank Keenan put a different complexion on the proceedings as there was now just a point between the sides. Mick O' Sullivan had a Castletown point but they got their answer in emphatic fashion when Camross raised four white flags on the trot, per Seán Bergin, Fint Scully and Frank Keenan (2).
Des Healy had a point before Tommy Delaney raised two white flags to leave the winners four points to the good as the scoreboard read Camross 3-10 Castletown 2-9. Jimmy Hanlon added to the excitement when he buried the sliothar to the back of the net before Con Wall had a penalty stopped by Johnny Carroll. Frank Keenan sealed the victory for Camross when he pointed a similar free just before the final whistle.
Best for Camross were Johnny Carroll, Mick Carroll, Alo Delaney in defence, Seán Bergin did well at midfield while Fint Scully, Des Healy and Frank Keenan were the pick of their attack.
Best for the losers were Joe Dollard, Paddy Hegarty, Seamie Hyland, Vinny Palmer, Mick O' Sullivan and Joe Phelan.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown, playing with great spirit and determination despite being short a few regulars, almost caused a minor shock being defeated by County S.H.C. runners up Camross by a slender 2 point margin. Castletown had a great start when a long ball by P.J. Mullaney went all the way to the net. Vinny Palmer was outstanding at midfield and the rest were playing well. Castletown had built up a 2-7 to 1-3 half time lead. However as in many of the other games through the year the 2nd half performance was not on a par with the first. Camross had 2 goals in quick succession in the early minutes of the 2nd half and were soon level and then ahead. Castletown's hopes were rekindled when Jimmy Hanlon had a goal and a chance for Con Wall to goal from a late 21m free was wasted and Camross held out to win.
This was a good performance by Castletown in their last S.H.C. game of the year and especially so considering that the result mattered little to them from a qualification point of view and that they lined out minus Paul Dollard (injured), John Bergin (suspended) and many of the subs not turning up. All played well.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, Tom Palmer, Mick Peters, Mick Boyhan, Paddy Hegarty, Joe Dollard (0-2, 165m), Seamie Hyland, P.J. Mullaney (1-0), Vinny Palmer (0-4), Bernie O' Keefe, Con Wall (0-1f), Mick O' Sullivan (0-2), Pat Phelan, Oliver Dollard, Joe Phelan (1-0)

Castletown 1-8 Durrow 2-5
From Secretary's Notes
A point from a free by Gerry Gaughan in the dying minutes of the game earned Castletown another chance to qualify for the J.F.C. semi final. In a poor quarter final game the exchanges were fairly even all through. Durrow opened the scoring with a point but a long range free from Gerry Gaughan went straight to the net to give Castletown the lead. However, Durrow had a goal shortly after and the teams were level 1-4 each at half time. Castletown took the lead in the 2nd half with an early point but Durrow had a goal and a point to give them a 3 point lead. Castletown did not give up and had 3 points to level the game.
That Castletown got a second chance was mainly due to the brilliance of of Paddy Delaney in goals (deputising for the injured Seamus O' Brien) saving three certain goals in a period of intense 2nd half pressure. Otherwise Castletown played poorly, the defence was often shaky, midfield was often out of it and the forwards fluffed many scoring chances but Vinny Palmer had a good game and Ger Gaughan's kicking was invaluable.
Castletown Team; Patrick Delaney, Con Wall, Bernie Ferns, Tommy Donovan, Ger Tynan, Richie Phelan, Seán Mullaney, P.J. Mullaney, Gerry Gaughan, Joe Dollard, Oliver Dollard, Mick O' Sullivan, Vinny Palmer, Charlie Phelan, P.J. Dunne

From Secretary's Notes
Castletown (with the assistance of Camross) suffered a 5 point defeat at the hands of Ballyroan on the first round of the rural M.F.C. Ballyroan always had control of the game with a better balanced side and were 0-8 to 0-1 up at half time. Castletown came at them strong on the restart and scored 1-2, the goal from a Joe Dollard penalty, to put them withing 2 points. Ballyroan, with a late rally, scored 0-3 without reply to give them victory, after a tough scrappy game with some of the Castletown players lucky to remain on the field after being responsible for very dangerous play.

Durrow 1-5 Castletown 0-3
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown's unprecedented good run in the J.F.C. came to an end when convincingly beaten by Durrow in the Quarter Final Replay in ideal conditions at Ballacolla and so the hopes of qualifying to play Abbeyleix in the semi final with a good chance of at least making it to the final were dashed. Castletown started well and Mick O' Sullivan opened the scoring with with a point from a free. Joe Dollard, a late arrival, having replaced Tommy Donovan had a point from play but that was Castletown's last score of the half despite a more than equal share of possession. Durrow had their first score shortly after when a ball that seemed to be going wide was flicked to the net and they followed this with a point to give them a 1-1 to 0-2 half time lead. In the second half Castletown had at least an equal share of possession but the forwards were unable to make use of it and Castletown's only score of the half was a point from a Gerry Gaughan free while Durrow had 0-4 and so the game ended with Durrow 5 points ahead. For Castletown, Paddy Delaney though seldom tested could not be faulted for the goal that passed him. The backs played soundly enough with Bernie Ferns (2 days before his wedding) playing very well. P.J. Mullaney had a great game at midfield as had Vinny Palmer when he moved to that area late in the game but the forwards rarely troubled their opponents as the low score indicates.
Castletown Team; Patrick Delaney, Con Wall, John Bergin, Bernie Ferns, Ger Tynan, Gerry Gaughan (0-1f), Seán Mullaney, P.J. Mullaney, Tommy Donovan, Vinny Palmer, Oliver Dollard, Mick O' Sullivan (0-1f), Mick Cuddy, Charlie Phelan, P.J. Dunne

Minor Hurling Championship 11/8/82
Rathdowney 3-9 Castletown-Slieve Bloom 3-1
From Secretary's Notes;
Castletown's hopes of winning a championship in 1982 were dashed when decisively beaten by reigning champions Rathdowney in a hard tough game in the Minor Hurling Championship. Having been eliminated from every other competition this was Castletown's only hope for glory but sadly it ended without a victory and saw Castletown's elimination from its third competition in little over a week. This game was not given away lightly despite the fact that Castletown were 0-1 to 2-4 down at half time after a first half display of great determination but one in which they were outclassed by their opponents. The second half saw an inspirational improvement with Joe Dollard and Mick O' Sullivan in brilliant form and scoring 3 goals between them to bring Castletown within striking distance. These individual performances were not enough however against an evenly balanced and stronger Rathdowney team who withstood numerous raids on their goals and added scores intermittently to hold out to win. All Castletown's players tried hard but were weak in many sectors but Joe Joe Dunne and Paddy Dollard, as well as Noel Phelan and Francis Hegarty were best on a team that lined out without the injured Tom Cuddy and suspended John Bergin.
Castletown-Slieve Bloom: Paul Bergin, Joe Joe Dunne, Paul Fitzpatrick, T.J. Young, Maurice Fitzpatrick, Noel Phelan, Liam Coss, Joe Dollard (2-1), Mick O' Sullivan (1-0), Francis Hegarty, Paddy Dollard, Aidan Fitzpatrick, Henry Phelan, Patrick Doheny, John Phelan

Slieve Bloom Hurling Tournament 3/10/82
Castletown 2-15 Cullohill 1-7
From Secretary's Notes
An understrenght Castletown hurling team had a comfortable win over a Cullohill selection in the first round of the Slieve Bloom Senior Hurling Tournament. Though the game had been preceded by a heavy downpour, the field was in good order and it remained dry for the duration of the game. Castletown took the lead from the beginning but were never in complete control of the game until about 20 minutes into the second half with Paul Dollard, Mick O' Sullivan and Pat Phelan scoring freely, receiving a good supply of ball from a very dominant half back line. Castletown played well all through but the opposition was not up to a high standard.
Castletown Team; Seamus Bergin, Tom Palmer, Mick Peters, Bernie Ferns, Paddy Hegarty, Joe Dollard, Seamie Hyland, P.J. Mullaney, Vinny Palmer, Seán Mullaney, Paddy Dollard, Mick O' Sullivan, Donie Doheny, Paddy Cuddy, Pat Phelan

O' Brady Cup Senior Hurling 24/10/82
Portlaoise 2-9 Castletown 1-10
From Leinster Express
Portlaoise stretched
Portlaoise were stretched to edge out Castletown at Borris in Ossory on Sunday last in this Brady Cup quarter final. The county champions were short six of the side that defeated St. Vincents in the Leinster Club championship at Mountrath the previous day. However, the replacements used against Castletown proved good enough to take the honours on this occasion.
Portaoise were awarded a penalty and 21 yard free both of which were stopped by Palmer but Billy Bohane goaled from a melee when he kicked the sliothar to the Castletown net. The teams left the field at the interval level at 1-4 to 0-7.
Castletown were awarded another penalty and this time Wall made no mistake and reduced the arrears to just 2 points with only a minute left. However, it was too little too late adn was more in the form of a consolation goal than anything else.
Best for Portlaoise were Philip Rochford, without whom the would not have won, the defence played well when John Bohane moved to centre half. John Taylor was an inspirational force at centre field while Billy Bohane was the pick of a poor attack.
Mick Peters and Joe Dollard were in fine form in the Castletown defence, P.J. Mullaney played very well at midfield, whilst Con Wall and Bernie O' Keefe were best in attack.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown, who got a walkover from Miltown to qualify for the quarter final of the O' Brady Cup, put up a very good showing against County Champions Portlaoise, but failed narrowly mainly due to a lack of fitness. In a very entertaining game Castletown were well in contention all through and outhurled their rivals in most sectors of the field for most of the game but attacks were thwarted time and again by Portlaoise goalkeeper Philip Rochford. Despite his brilliance Castletown might still have won were it not for a lack of recent training and a 3 month lay off for most of the team.

Slieve Bloom Hurling Tournament 7/11/82
Clonad 0-14 Castletown 1-9
From Secretary's Notes
Clonad inflicted its second defeat of the year and agin won by a two point margin when winning this semi final in cold conditions at Deerpark. This was a very entertaining game from start tot finish with the result in balance to the end but again as in the championship clash Clonad came out on top. Castletown played very well all through but gave away some needless frees in the final minutes and so literally the game away. Thus went Castletown's last chance of success in 1982, and last game also.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, Mick Dollard, Mick Peters, John Bergin, Mick Boyhan, Con Wall, Seamie Hyland, P.J. Mullaney, Joe Dollard (0-1), Mick O' Sullivan (0-6, 4f), Paddy Hegarty (1-0), Paul Dollard, Oliver Dollard (0-1), Jimmy Hanlon, Bernie O' Keefe (0-1)
