Secretary's Report 1997
It gives me great pleasure to present this report as Secretary of Castletown GAA and to welcome everyone to this, our 24th Annual General Meeting.
1997 was one of the best years in the clubs history. The Senior Hurlers regained the Championship and reached the final of the Leinster Championship, while the Juniors claimed the first ever Special (Junior C) title for the club.
The Seniors brought respect and pride back to the club after some fine performances in the county final against The Harps and in particular in the Leinster Club Championship. The team gained alot of experience from their outings. The fixtures committee threw us out of the O' Brady Cup semi final. Pat Delaney made a huge difference to the team and both players, club mentors and outsiders respected him.
The Junior C team, or Super Juniors, always seemed to be title contenders. They beat Trumera in the final with a mixture of youth and experience. I thank the players for the effort put in during the run to the final. They were beaten by The Harps in the league final.
The Junior A team fell at the first attempt. They led Shanahoe for most of the game and were caught by a late goal, This was a championship left behind. Players didn't put in the effort in training. They were well beaten by Camross in the league semi final. This was due to a lack of training and players gone up senior.
The Minors came up against stronger opposition and following beatings by Camross and Borris in Ossory did not come out of the group. The majority of the team are under-age again next year.
The U21 team were beaten by Camross in the semi final. Also the majority of this team have another year.
The Junior Football team lost to Ballyroan for the second year in a row in the first round. The team never trained.
I would like to thank Mrs. Coss and the I.C.A. for the use of their premises and for providing us with a meal after the championship success.
The club ran a successful table quiz, golf classic, and at the moment the £100 tickets are going well. The fuel auction was also a success. I would also like to thank all those who sponsored us during the year. I would also like to thank Tom Doheny for the help with all the teams during the year. I would also like to thank Mairead, Carmel and Claire Cuddy for making the tea for players and mentors during the year.
I also thank all those who helped me out this year, especially the committee, and I would like to see Mick stay to help put Senior titles back to back. Batt Lynch for all the work done behind the scenes. I thank all the selectors and trainers for helping out the club, especially Pat Delaney who put us on a whole new level of playing hurling.
Every year has its good points and bad ones. The Carlow Elevens, in which we failed to take the top prize for the second year, but the manner in which our supporters insulted the referee and unsulted our Chairman was a disgrace. I felt sorry for Mick, because it seems some don't realise the work he does for the club.
The night in the hurling field that a player and selector had a disagreement. The following weekend we hurled Clough/Ballacolla in the league and there was no selector to be seen. The team was picked by the Chairman, Vice Chairman and committee member who takes care of the hurls and balls during the year. Is it a policy of one out all out, or stick together and win a few championships in 1998.
I wish the club every success in the coming year.
Is Mise,
Pádraig Ó Faoláin
