SHC Semi Final 7/9/02 @ O' Moore Park
Castletown 1-7 Rathdowney 0-7
From Laois GAA Website
Castletown and Rathdowney battled it out on Saturday last in the second of the Senior Hurling Ch'ship semi-finals for 2002 for the right to take on Tinnahinch in the final.
It was Rathdowney who made the better start and Alan Delaney had them two points to no score ahead after just a few minutes. It took the reigning county champions 9 minutes to open their account with a free from Patrick Phelan. Phelan levelled matters in the 17th minute, this time with a point from play.
It was Rathdowney who finished the half the stronger and in the 19th minute Peter Creagh scored the first of his hat-trick of points before the half-time whistle.
With Castletown three points down at half-time and Rathdowney playing some excellent hurling we were in for a thrilling second half.

HALF-TIME: RATHDOWNEY 0-5 CASTLETOWN 0-2
Castletown rang the changes at half-time and the introduction of John Richard Kingston for James Hooban made an impact almost immediately on the restart as after only 30 seconds of the trow-in John Richard Kingston had the ball in the back of the Rathdowney net and now the sides were on level terms.
No. 6 Pat Mahon had a point for Rathdowney to put them back in front. A Fionan O'Suillivan effort for Castletown went wide as did a Patrick Phelan effort. Barry McElvelry then received a yellow card for Castletown before a Cyril Cuddy point from play put the sides back on level terms midway through the half: Castletown 1-3 Rathdowney 0-6.
Castletown failed to go in front when Paul Cuddy put a free wide. In the 16th minute Brian Ferns was fouled but David Cuddy put the resulting free wide. Alan Delaney shot wide for Rathdowney before Castletown went in front for the first time in the game when after 21 minutes of the second half David Cuddy put a point over the Tinnahinch crossbar.
Castletown had a goal chance when a Patrick Phelan shot was saved by Rathdowney goalie JP Ryan and it went out for a 65'. The resulting 65' was put over the bar for Castletown as Rathdowney began to see the game slip from their grasp. Castletown had tow further points before Rathdowney had a point from a free a minute and a half before injury time.
Paul Cuddy shot wide a minute into injury-time and try as they might Rathdowney couldn't get the vital goal to see the game to replay.
Castletown are now through to meet Tinnahinch for the second year in a row in the final. One interesting point of note is that regardless of the result in the final, Castletown will represent Laois in the Leinster Club Ch'ship as Tinnahinch are an area team and even if they win the Laois championship area teams are not allowed compete in the provincal and All-Ireland Club Championships.

Castletown 4-9 Tinnahinch 2-4
From Laois GAA Website
On the premier hurling day in the Laois GAA Calendar of 2002 Castletown and Tinnahinch battled it out for the second time within a year for the right to win the Bob O'Keefe cup. Castletown already fresh from their win over Rathdowney last week hoped for a double celebration as they had already claimed the title of Ireland's Tidiest Town only last Monday. Tinnahinch had needed a replay to get over the strong challenge posed to them from The Harps at the semi-final stage and so the scene was set for an epic encounter.
An epic encounter it wasn't to be as Tinnahinch never seemed to reach top form in a dower affair in which Castletown dominated for most of the game. Séamus Lyons got Castletown off to a perfect start after just 15 seconds when he goaled for Castletown. Martin Phelan then received a Yellow Card for Castletown in the 1st minute before Patrick Phelan pointed two frees in the 3rd and 13th minute to put Castletown into a five point lead. Castletown then went six points in front when Castletown captain Paul Cuddy got a point from play almost midway through the half with Tinnahinch still to register a score.
Things began to get worse for Tinnahinch when a wild pull from Mark Rooney on Paul Cuddy resulted in a yellow card. Further bad luck for Tinnahinch came in the 25th minute when a Cyril Cuddy ball into the square was batted down by Tinnahinch goalie John Corcoran and the sliotar got to the incoming Seamus Lyons for his second goal of the game. Castletown 2-3 Tinnahinch 0-0.
Richie McEvoy then received a yellow card for Tinnahinch. Seamus Lyons pointed a free for Castletown in the 31st minute before James Young finally opened the Tinnahinch account with a free 40 seconds later. Seamus Dooley then got a yellow card for Tinnahinch which was to prove decisive later. Seamus Lyons pointed the resulting free to finish the half with Castletown leading comfortably.

HALF-TIME: CASTLETOWN 2-5 TINNAHINCH 0-1
Tinnahinch came out all guns blazing for the second half when James Young pointed from the 65' spot. Seamus Lyons and James Young exchanged pointed frees in the 2nd and 4th minutes before James Young added another point from a free in the 10th minute. Joe Dooley then brought the Tinnahinch crowd to their feet with a well taken goal from play in the 12th minute to leave the score Castletown 2-6 Tinnahinch 1-4.
Then almost two minutes later as Tinnahinch gathered momentum Castletown struck with a goal as Tinnahinch made a major defensive error which Castletown capitalised on. Seamus Dooley was then shown a staright red card two minutes later to add more pain to Tinnahinch's woes. Seamus Lyons then pointed a free for Castletown before Tinnahinch goalie John Corcoran received a yellow card for an alleged strike inside the square as he came out with the ball and David Cuddy coverted the resulting penelty over the Tinnahinch crossbar.
Tinnahinch fought back with a goal from substitute David Walsh but it was to late. Castletown then got another point a John Richard Kingston converted point. To add further pain to a day Tinnahinch will want to erase from their memories referee Anthony Stapleton awarded a goal to Castletown which the umpires were adament was a square ball. Nevertheless the referee was adament it was a legitimate goal which was credited to man of the match Seamus Lyons.

ONLY two Leinster clubs can win four successive hurling titles this year. Birr of Offaly and the reigning Laois champions Castletown.
Castletown opened the scoring with a Seamus Lyons goal inside the opening minute and from there to the finish they were the complete masters as they led 2-5 to 0-1 at the break.Yesterday, at O'Moore Park, Portlaoise, in a very disappointing Laois SHC final, Castletown stretched their unbeaten record to four years with a very comfortable victory.
On the change-over, James Young scored three points in quick succession, and when Dermot Walsh, who had come on as sub, scored a goal after 42 minutes a Tinnahinch revival looked on.
However, a long-range free by Castletown captain Paul Cuddy took a deflection into the Tinnahinch net. A minute later Tinnahinch had their captain and full-back Seamus Dooley red-carded for an off-the-ball incident.
