Secretary's Report 1990
It gives me great pleasure to present this, my first report as Secretary of Castletown GAA Club and to welcome everyone to this, our 17th AGM.
It gives me great pleasure to have the privilege of congratulating our Junior B team and minor team on both winning the both championship and league finals.
Our Junior B team gave an impressive display against Mountmellick in the Junior B Championship Final held in O' Moore Park on 18th August 1990 even though we had the misfortune of having a player sent off, but he had the pleasure of bringing his opponent to the line as well.
In the Junior B League Final, which was held in Mountrath on the 22nd September we had the pleasure of beating Clonad in a game in which every player showed full commitment and determination under the guidance of Seán Mullaney their captain. This proved they were the best Junior B team in Laois. On behalf of the club I would like to thank the selectors for putting this team together to win a Junior B Championship and League Final. I would like to thank P.J. Mullaney, Paddy Cuddy and Mick O' Sullivan for the effort they put in to producing this team.
Our minors went into the county final as underdogs but surprised Portlaoise with their determination and hunger for success, led by captain Alfie Holmes. It was a privilege for them to win the county minor final considering some of the players were as young as fifteen years of age.
They completed the double by beating Borris in Ossory in the minor hurling league final which was played in Mountrath. Again they showed determination and hunger to win and I would like to compliment them on the manner in which they win both finals and I would like to thank John O' Sullivan, Gerry Gaughan along with Pat Phelan, Liam Dollard and John Cuddy for helping to bring a Minor Championship title to Castletown.
Our U21 team had a walkover in the first round from Ballinakill and went through to a semi final against The Harps. Unfortunately we were beaten in this game in which The Harps proved more superior to us. The game was played in Rathdowney on a very windy day and The Harps, with the advantage of a first half wind, built up a lead which they never lost.
Our Senior team were beaten in the first round of the Championship by Clonad by a large margin. Clonad proved far superior to us on the day. We did not fulfill the first fixture against Rathdowney because some of our players were injured. We appealed to the fixture's committee to have the game re-fixed. The game was re-fixed on the condition that we played in Rathdowney's home ground and paid a £100 fine. We played the game in Rathdowney and were beaten by a narrow margin. There was just one point in the game at the end. I think with a little more commitment from players and officials we should be aiming to reach the Senior Semi Final this year and work from there.
We were beaten by The Harps in the first round of the O' Brady Cup. They had a better all-round side on the day.
In the Junior Football there was no success during the year. This was due to a lack of interest in the club towards football. After defeating St. Josephs in the first round in a blizzard the football in the club seemed to go down hill interest wise. I would like if the players who opted off the team during the year would express their views here tonight so that the same thing won't happen this year.
We held a very successful Dinner Dance on the 16th of March. Slieve Bloom joined us and a great night was had by all. Unfortunately Mick Peters was unable to attend as his uncle had died but Bernie Ferns filled his position on the night and did a very successful job.
The club also organised a celebration meal in the I.C.A. Hall for Junior and Minor players which was held on Sunday 9th September and was enjoyed by all. I would like to thank the I.C.A. for the work they put into providing the meal.
I would like to congratulate Denis Wall on being elected Vice Chairman of Laois Hurling Board. It is a great honour for the club to have one of our members in a senior position on the hurling board.
I would like to thank the selectors for the job they done for each team during the year. It is a hard and difficult job which many people do not realise. I would like to thank John O' Sullivan for training the U21 team. I would like to thank the Chairman Mick Peters and Treasurer Seán Mullaney and the committee for all their help. I would like to express a sincere thanks Jimmy & Mrs. Cuddy for looking after the jersies. Also thanks to the I.C.A. and Oliver Dollard for the use of their premises for meetings during the year.
I would like to thank the Juvenile Club and their Chairman Pat Kirwan for the work they are doing. I would like to express my thanks to Paddy Cuddy for the great work he has done for juveniles and the way he has trained them. This has been proved over the past three years where Castletown have reached three minor finals and won two of them. I would like to thank Slieve Bloom for their co-operation during the year also.
I will not be putting my name forward for Secretary this year due to other commitments. I wish Castletown GAA every success for the coming year.
Go raibh mile maith agaibh go leir.
