Secretary's Report 2010
It is my pleasure as secretary of Castletown G.A.A. Club to present the secretary’s report for 2010. This is the Club’s 37th A.G.M. In 2010 four club teams competed in seven county hurling competitions with varied levels of performance. However no honours were secured in any of the competitions despite being close on some occasions.
At senior level the year we competed in the league and finished fourth place in the table with six wins, two draws and two losses. In the championship the seniors finished at the top of the group in the qualifying stages but lost out at the quarter final stage.
In the division 3 league the junior team lost the final after finishing top of their group in the qualifying stage. In the championship they lost out at the quarter final stage, again after finishing top of the group in the qualifying rounds.
The U21 team lost out in the first match of the championship. In the minor championship we were knocked out in the first round and lost all matches in the league.
I would like to thank all those who have participated in club activities helped the club over the past year. I would like to thank the players for their efforts at all levels, minor U21, Junior and senior. I would also like to congratulate and thank all the players from the Club who represented Laois at county level.
Minors
This year our minors amalgamated with Slieve Bloom. The team competed in the Minor A league and championship. In the league competition the team lost all of the four qualifying matches suffering losses to Camross, The Harps, Ballacolla and Abbeyleix Ballypickas. The championship format was on a knockout basis. The team were defeated in the first match by a much stronger Rathdowney/Errill team. In reality we barely had sufficient numbers to field a team and we were not strong enough to compete in the A Leagues and Championships.
I would like to thank Monica Delaney, Fionán Cuddy, Joe Delaney, Loughlin Hegarty and Ciarán Cuddy and his selectors for managing and training the team and all the players who took part despite our limited resources.
U21
The U21 team was an amalgamation of Castletown, Slieve Bloom and Ballyfin. The U21 championship competition was run on a knockout basis. The team lost out at the round 1 stage of the competition to a much favoured Camross team despite a spirited team performance. Camross went on to win the competition with relative ease. I would like to thank Mark Peters and Padraig Cuddy for preparing the team and all the players who took part.
Junior A
The Junior team started well this year with an excellent run in the Division 3 league losing only one match, finishing top of the group and securing a place in the final. However we lost out in the final to The Harps. In the championship we finished top of the group with 2 wins over Mountrath and Slieve Bloom and one walkover against Rathdowney/Errill. In the quarter final we lost out to Timahoe. We struggled a bit in the first half but managed to take the lead after half time. However two sending off’s in quick succession midway through the second half left us with a depleted team and Timahoe ran out easy winners. While the Junior team showed improved performance in this year’s championship, the sending off’s at a crucial stage of the match cost us dearly. I believe the potential is there to go on and win a Junior championship with a bit more effort from all involved.
I would like to thank team manager John O’Sullivan and Selectors Brendan Peters and Patrick Phelan for their efforts and dedication in preparing the team.
Senior
The senior team had a varied year. In the ACHL Div 1 we had a reasonable run and finished fourth in the table, just missing out on a qualifying position, with six wins, two draws and two losses. We had some notable wins in the league against Clough Ballacolla and Rathdowney/Errill.
In the championship we were drawn in a group of three with Borris In Ossary and Mountrath. We qualified easily for the quarter finals and were drawn against last year’s champions, Clough Ballacolla. Our performance against Clough Ballacolla was not up to the standard and we lost by a margin of 8 points. Loss of key players at the knockout stage was a key factor that we could not afford.
Overall performance in the championship was difficult to assess. In the qualifying stages competition was weak and in the first real test at the knockout stage we were easily beaten. On the other hand we showed significant promise in the league. We are heavily dependant on older members of the squad and we need to develop and encourage the promising younger members to step up to the standard required for senior championship and to take on the reasonability of leading the team to success.
I would like to thank John O’Sullivan and his team Mick Phelan and Danny Reddin for all the work they put in, preparing and coaching the teams. I would also like to thank Monica Delaney, for organising practice matches physio’s etc throughout the year and for the communication of fixtures and events to all players, mentors and club members.
Membership
A new membership was introduced in the club this year as a result of the proposal at last years AGM by Paul Cuddy. This has been a huge success with over 180 fully paid up members which resulted from a co-ordinated effort to encourage new members into the club. All the club membership promises have been delivered with members getting free admission to home league games, text updates for match fixtures and results, Club Merchandise and free draw for all Ireland tickets. I would like to thank all who worked to enlist members and who delivered on the membership commitments. 2011 is likely to be a more difficult year for memberships and a sustained effort will be needed to encourage and maintain current membership levels.
In addition to the 180 members above the club also registered 61 Juvenile members.
In conclusion I would like to thank all those involved in Castletown GAA Club over the past year. The operation of the Club requires a lot of effort and I would like to thank my fellow officers and committee members for their help and co-operation.
I would also like to thank the following:
Carroll’s Quarries – Main Sponsors
Pat Phelan – Sale to Tipperary Draw tickets
Tom Doheny – Physio
Mary Hooban – Looking after jerseys
Secretaries in Sean Fleming’s office – Race night preparation and general administration,
Pat Delaney – Race night MC and preparation
Mick Phelan and Fionán O’Sullivan – Golf Classic organisation
I would also like to thank all our supporters and ticket sellers without whom the Club could not exist. More supporters and volunteers are always needed to ensure we remain a strong and vibrant club.
I wish to sympathise with all those who have suffered bereavements during the year.
I would like to thank all those who have helped me during the year particularly my fellow club officers. This has been my fifth year as club secretary and I will not to be seeking re election as I have decided to step down from the position.
Finally I would like to wish the Club every success in 2011.
Is Mise,
Seán O’Fionnalaigh
