Portlaoise 0-12 Castletown 0-11
From Laois GAA Website
In the opening round of the Senior Hurling Championship at O'Moore Park on Wednesday 18th June the shock of the championship so far was produced when Portlaoise had a narrow one point win over County Champions Castletown on a 0-12 to 0-11 scoreline. Indeed it was Castletown's first loss in the County Championship for all of five years. Castletown played second fiddle to the County town men for most of the hour and although trailing by a point with nine minutes remaining they could not get the better of Portlaoise.
Seámus Lyons opened the scoring for the Castletown men but failed to add to his tally after this and indeed was substituted before the finish. Fionán O'Suillivan added three points also for Castletown in the first quarter but with points from Noel Costelloe (3), Teddy Fennelly, Cyril Duggan and Brian McCormack gave Portlaoise a two point lead on a scoreline of 0-6 to 0-4 after 15 minutes of action.
A Barry McKelvey point left the minimum between the sides after 20 minutes and inspirational points from Brian McCormack and Tommy Mulligan opened up a three point gap. John Palmer replied for the Castletown men to leave the gap back at two points as the sides retired for half-time.
HALF-TIME: Portlaoise 0-8 Castletown 0-06
David Cuddy moved to centre-forward for the Noresiders and within two minutes of the restart opened with a point from play. Portlaoise won a free a Noel Costelloe converted but Fionan O'Suillivan cancelled out his score with a point as the champions who were now wind assisted came back strongly into the game. Noel Costelloe added two further points in as many minutes to stretch the gap to three points. Four points separted the sides after Cahir Healy pointed with the champions now looking in trouble of losing their unbeaten run.
Portlaoise did not score for the remainder of the game and try as they might Castletown could not pull back the Portlaoise lead. Points from Eoin Dooley and David Cuddy left just two points between the teams with ten minutes remaining. With 4 minutes of time left John Palmer set up David Cuddy to leave just a point separating the sides 0-12 to 0-11 and a draw at least was on the cards.
But the draw didn't materialise. Castletown threw everything they could at the Portlaoise men but to no avail. Castletown went searching for a goal but a John Palmer shot was saved magnificantly by John Hanniffy in the Portlaoise goals. Five minutes of injury time ensued but Castletown could not find the posts as so the County town men ran out winners by the minimum margin.
