Secretary's Report 1996
Fáilte róimh go léir anseo inniu. This is the 23rd AGM of the Club. I was honoured to be elected Secretary of the Club in 1996.
September 22nd 1996 is the day we all want to forget when we lost our Senior Hurling crown to Camross and become the focus of attention for all the wrong reasons. I feel we didn't deserve all the criticism but we were certainly punished for our misdemeanours and have learned a hard lesson. There was some consolation for the Senior Hurlers in winning the Gortnahoe Tournament on August Monday and in being runners-up to Cashel King Cormacs of Tipperary in the prestigious Carlow 11s final. Some very useful challenge games were arranged by Batt Lynch.
Our Minor Hurling team looked very promising but were beaten by Portlaoise by the narrowest of margins and Portlaoise went on to win the final. Having had a good run in the league they were beaten by Rathdowney in the final.
At this point in time the U21 Championship has not been completed and our lads still have a semi final date with Portlaoise.
The Junior Hurlers proved to be the only successful team in the club in 1996, defeating Slieve Bloom in the Championship Final played at Rathdowney on Saturday 9th November. This team plays Colt in the league final. P.J. Mullaney was later chosen as Junior B Hurler of the Year and I congratulate him on his achievement.
Our Junior Football team promised much in the early part of the season and were unlucky to be beaten by Ballyroan in a replay on September 12th. The downpours in Colt didn't help our style.
The Club had many fundraising and social events during the year. The dinner dance and presentation of medals in the Killeshin Hotel with Babs Keating as special guest was the highlight of the year. The Easter Sunday dance and the Golf Classic were well organised and well supported. Draws, fuel sale and table quiz all produced good financial results.
However, it seems to be the same few people in the club who do all the fundraising. The lack of support for the County Board Lotto is regrettable in my opinion as it presents an easy, responsibility free method of fundraising.
I feel that all events organised by the club should be supported by all the members of the club. We, the members, are the club.
The Juvenile Club officers deserve credit for their great efforts. The parents of our younger players should get involved in the Juvenile Club and not leave so much to be done by so few.
The committee of 20 met on 21 occasions during 1996. There was an overall average attendance of approximately 62%. I feel that as a working committee it is too big. I would suggest that this AGM consider a committee of half that size. Consisting of the Club Officers (8) and a maximum of 3 others.
Great credit is due to all who helped the club in any way during 1996 from grass cutting to ticket selling to jersey washing. I wish to thank our own ladies committee who organise catering at dances, training sessions etc. I also wish to express gratitude to the I.C.A. and especially Mrs. Coss for all their help. Thanks also to the I.C.A. and Community Hall committees for the use of their facilities and also to the proprietor of the Castletown Inn where have held draws etc.
I hope our loyal supporters will be behind us as we look forward to better things in 1997.
Finally, to you my fellow officers I say thank you for your support, patience and encouragement during 1996. It was a pleasure to work with you and may I wish all present every success in 1997.
Is Mise,
Monica Ui Dubhshláine

Other Events during 1996
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 1996 U21 Championship was not completed until March 1997. Castletown defeated Portlaoise in the semi final but lost narrowly to Camross in the final, after a disappointing performance in a game they would have been expected to win.

Mick Peters was appointed as a Senior Hurling Selector with Laois along with manager Babs Keating and Seán Cuddy of Camross.
