Secretary's Report 1994
It gives me great pleasure to present this report as Secretary of Castletown GAA and to welcome everyone to this, our 21st Annual General Meeting.
It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the Junior B Footballers, as it was a great honour for me to captain them to their first Championship title.
The Senior Hurlers got one step further than last year, but Camross beat them in a semi final. They are also in the O' Brady Cup final against Camross. The team did not perform on the day but this goes back to training and practice matches. Some players had work commitments but others did not bother or they were training with the county the night before or hurling at the weekend. You have to train as a team to hurl as a team. On behalf of the club I thank Oliver Dollard, Bernie Ferns, Jack Bergin, Mick Peters, Mick Cuddy and Frank Keenan.
The minor hurlers were beaten in the first round after a replay by Mountrath. The team was unlucky not to have won the first day but were outclassed in the replay. The team trained very little together and had only two challenge matches. Both players and selectors are at fault. For the coming year more commitment must be put in by all. On behalf of the club I thank P.J. Cuddy, Gerry Gaughan and Paddy Cuddy.
The Junior B Hurlers did fairly well, but could have won the Championship. They were unlucky against Rathdowney in the second round. In the league a better Borris in Ossory team beat them on the day. More organisation of the team could have brought them to a final. On behalf of the club I thank John Bergin, Paul Cuddy and Mattie Cuddy.
The U21 hurlers were beaten by Camross in the semi final. There was only one bit of a challenge match hurled and on the day the senior players on the team did not hurl up to standard. There must be more of an effort put into the management side if the club is going to win an U21 title. On behalf of the club I thank Mick Peters, Mick Dollard and Jimmy Lyons.
The Junior Footballers collected their first Championship title. They beat a weakened Emo team in the final and also won the league title last February defeating Colt in the final. On behalf of the club I thank Pat Phelan and Gerry Gaughan and all who arranged challenge matches.
I would also, on behalf of the club, thank Seamus Fahy for his help at matches and at training.
I would also thank the I.C.A. for the use of their hall and providing us with tea during the year, and James Moore for the use of his premises.
The club ran a very successful table quiz and dance on Easter weekend. I would like to thank everyone who helped out on both nights and those who supported them. The club also ran an auction which was very well supported by the locals. I would like to also thank those who donated items and those who spent money on the evening.
The Juvenile Club had a quiet year but there needs to be more coaching done by the Senior Club with the juveniles. Players are able to go on summer camps and coach other school teams, why not start at home, where you were coached?
I would like to thank the finance committee for the funds they raised for the club, but they need more members.
I would finally like to thank the men who helped me most during the year. Mick Cuddy who has put alot of time and work into this club. I hope the players will repay him back shortly, before he leaves, by putting in the training and bringing back a senior final. I would also like to thank Mick Peters, Seán Mullaney, Padraig Cuddy, Gerry Gaughan and the committee members for their help. I also thank Mrs and Jimmy Cuddy for looking after the jersies and all those who supported us financially and at matches while we were playing. Thank you.
I wish the club every success in the coming year.
Is Mise,
