Secretary's Report 1983
It gives me great pleasure to present this, my second report as Secretary, at Castletown GAA Club's 10th Annual General Meeting and to welcome you all here tonight.
Although I have not the privilege of congratulating any of our teams on winning any championships or tournaments in 1983. It should not dishearten us for the future Senior Hurling Championship.
Senior Hurling:
We got away to a dream start in the championship when we beat Borris in Ossory in Mountrath and our next game was against the County Champions, Portlaoise. Originally fixed for Mountrath, it was eventually played at Clonaslee in terrible conditions.
Nevertheless, the team played extremely well but alas we were beaten by two points in the end. A few missed chances here and there by our forwards proved costly. The game itself was a thriller. We should not have been too disappointed to lose to the champions. Our next game was against Durrow in Abbeyleix . Again we seemed to have thrown in the towel too early so Durrow won convincingly. The next game was against Park Ratheniska at Mountrath. The team overcame their disappointment of losing to Durrow and put in a great performance in beating Ratheniska so it was onto the game against Cullohill in Abbeyleix. The team played well and emerged easy winners. Two wins in succession brought us to our next game against Clonad in Portlaoise. A win would have qualified us for the knock out stages.
We were forced to play with our third choice keeper. Again, the team played well, until Seamus Bergin got injured in goal. The team fell to pieces and so we were beaten narrowly by 3 points. Our last game was a formality against Abbeyleix and the outcome was a convincing win for Abbeyleix.
O' Brady Cup- We had a great win against arch rivals Clonad in Mountrath. Our next game was Camross and resulted in a comfortable win for our neighbours.
Junior Hurling:
Again the same fate befell our junior hurlers as last year. We started well but faded badly as the year went by.
Under 21 Hurling:
A team we expected to do well in the championship we were pitted against Camross in Borris in Ossory. A tough game was played with Camross the victors in the finish.
Minor Hurling:
We received a walkover from Portlaoise and out next game was against Camross in which we were beaten. Better luck in 1984.
Football:
Our footballers got off to a great start in the league with a couple of wins and looked promising for the championship against Ballinakill. The game was played in Shanahoe in terrible conditions, thunder and lightening in the first half. The weather improved for the second half.
The team played reasonably well throughout the game but were unable to overcome a very fit Ballinakill team.
Juvenile:
I will not dwell too long on the activities of our Juvenile Club. But would like, on behalf of the adult club, to pay tribute to all those concerned with looking after the juveniles and congratulating them on winning the U14 Rural Championship.
To the club I say- "keep up the good work", our future depends on ye.
Social and Financial:
We had a monster draw in July in the Monastery Hall. It was in no way near the same success as the Christmas Draw. Nevertheless, it kept the club going and our heads above water for the years expenses incurred.
I suppose you could say it was very poor indeed to say that we lacked in every way to improve on our financial position.
Congratulations:
Firstly, I would like to pay tribute to two of our own players, Michael O' Sullivan and Joe Dollard on winning Leinster U21 medals. It is a great honour for our club, the players themselves and their families. It should be every player's dream to play in the county colours and in doing so help bring success to our county.
I would like to thank all our players who participated in our games during the year. Also I would like to say thanks to our coach Michael Dollard for all his hard work and dedication to the players, and all concerned with the club.
I would like to thank our Chairman Seamus Fitzpatrick for his work during the year. To the committee, selectors, Joe Dunne, our supporters, Seán Brophy for supplying hurleys throughout the year, to the ICA, De la Salle and Delaney's for the use of their premises during the year.
Sympathy:
It is with deep regret that we lost 4 former players within the last 12 months. Paddy Behan, died in Slough. Jim Peters, Din Delaney and Jimmy Bergin- 3 men who gave loyal service to this club both on the field and to the every day running of the club.
They will always be remembered as long as the club exists. I would also like to sympathise with the Palmer family on the death of thier father, Jack who tragically died during the year.
To them all, may the Lord bless them and give them eternal rest.
General Comment:
And so to 1984. As you all know it is the Centenary Year of the GAA. I hope it brings back special memories to all those players who can look back on bye gone days and so to our own club officials. committee members and players I say the time has come to put our cards on the table. We will get nowhere with the way things have been going on over the past couple of years or so. Lack of discipline and dedication by the club and players, lack of dedication to training. Without any of these things nothing can be won. I hope a special effort can be made in 1984.
In conclusion, I wish everybody concerned with the club a Happy Christmas and a bright New Year.
Go raibh mile maith agaibh
