Secretary's Report 1985
It gives me great pleasure to present this, my fourth report as Secretary, at Castletown GAA Club's 12th Annual General Meeting and to welcome you all here tonight.
Although I have not the privilege of congratulating any of our teams on winning any championships in 1985, I would like to congratulate our Senior Hurling Team on winning the Mountrath Tournament, our only success in 1985. I would also like to congratulate our Junior Footballers on reaching the semi final of the championship, only to be beaten by Rosenallis by a couple of points. Let's hope we can go one better this year.
As for the Senior Championship, Junior, U21 and Minor, it was a disastrous year altogether and we can ask ourselves what was the cause of this.
You can lay the blame to each member of the club, officials and players alike it seems. As far as the players are concerned, you don't need to train. You go out on a Sunday and play the game. If we win it's great, we have a few more games to play, if we lose it does not seem to matter we will survive for something else to come along. That is the attitude of some of our players in this club.
Well, I have said it before on many occasions that attitude will not win anything for the club or any other club. You must have the will to win, be dedicated to training, discipline d on the field of play, and loyal to one another. With that instilled in players and officials minds we can achieve success.
Juvenile:
Once again it was left to our Juveniles to bring honour and victory to our club. I would like to congratulate then on winning the U12 Rural and County Championships and Slieve Bloom Tournament and the Schools Championship - it was a worthy achievement. I would like to congratulate their Chairman, trainers, selectors and all their mentors on a wonderful years success. With these people, and the way they look after young players, there is hope for the future in our club. I wish them every success in 1986.
I would like to thank Seán Brophy for supplying hurleys throughout the year. I would like to thank Seán Mullaney for his help during the year, our Chairman Denis Wall, selectors, committee members and players for their help during the year and to all members who helped.
We had one very great loss reaching the end of the year when we lost one of our great players and clubmen Kieran Dunphy. He loved the game of hurling, he loved Castletown Club, and I would say his only regret was that Castletown had not won a Senior Championship so far. May he Rest in Peace.
In conclusion, I hope that everybody will make a special effort seeing as we are gone back to Intermediate grade. We will make a new beginning and to make our club proud again.
I wish members a happy and successful 1986.
