Secretary's Report 2006
It is my pleasure as secretary of Castletown G.A.A. Club to present the secretary’s report for 2006. This is the Club’s 33rd A.G.M. 2006 was a mixed year for the club. We enjoyed some success at U21 and Intermediate level but failed to retain the senior county title, being beaten at the quarterfinal stage of the championship.
I would like to thank all those who have helped the club over the past year. I would like to thank the players for their efforts at all levels, minor U21, intermediate and senior. I would also like to congratulate and thank all the players from the Club who represented Laois at county level.
Minors
Our Minor team won all their matches in the qualifying stages of the Laois B Minor Championship this year but were beaten in the final by St Fintan’s Raheen. The team have done well despite limited numbers of players at this level. Efforts to affiliate players from the Slieve Bloom club were rejected by the County Board. More club members need to get involved in coaching and mentoring at this level. There are a number of potentially promising players who need coaching and guidance now to have any chance of success in the future.
U21
Our U21 team won the Laois B Championship by beating Clonad in a closely contested match. However the match of the year was the semi final against St. Fintans Raheen where the team showed true character and determination by coming from a 5 point deficit at half time to win by 2 points. I congratulate them on the success and I thank the team management and selectors for their tremendous efforts in achieving this success despite the setback of not being allowed to play players from Slieve Bloom. At one stage it looked like we wouldn’t be able to field a team because of insufficient numbers. I would like to thank Tom Dooley, Brian Ferns, and James Hooban for their efforts in recruiting and encouraging players to play at this level. As it turned out we had 21 players on the panel for the final. I think this shows the importance of encouraging all potential players in our community to participate in GAA games.
Intermediate
I would like to congratulate the intermediate team on winning the ACHL Division 3 final having won all their games in the qualifying stages of the league. However in the Championship we failed to win any of our matches despite what appeared to be a very strong team on paper. I believe that with a bit more effort and dedication the team that the team could go on to win the intermediate title. I would like to thank the selectors, Brendan Peters, Fint Cuddy and Ger Cuddy for their efforts and dedication during the year with the intermediate team.
Senior
In the senior championship we qualified in third place of the group having won two matches (Clonad and Mountrath), lost two matches (Portlaoise and Clough Ballacolla) and drew one (Kilcotton). We appeared to struggle a bit in the group matches despite good attendance and dedication at training. We lost out to Camross at the quarter final stage of the championship in somewhat controversial circumstances. The outcome of this match was appealed to the County Board and was rejected. The match result and the suspensions and fines, handed down by the County Board, were then appealed to the Leinster Council and again were rejected with the exception of David Cuddy’s suspension, which was upheld. As it stands the team that participated in the game are disqualified from the 2007 SHC. In addition to this the players that played on the day cannot be regarded in 2007 and they will maintain their senior status for 2008.
The suspensions are unprecedented and particularly harsh considering the majority of the players were not involved in the incident.
I would like to thank the team trainers and selectors John O’Sullivan, Paddy Kirwan, Paddy Brophy, P.J. Cuddy and Mick O’ Sullivan for their efforts and dedication during the year.
In conclusion I would like to thank all those involved in Castletown GAA Club over the past year. The operation of the Club requires a lot of effort and I would like to thank my fellow officers and committee members for their help and co-operation.
I would also like to thank the following:
Carroll’s Quarries – Main Sponsors
P.J. Cuddy and Gerry Gaughen – looking after the field and dressing rooms,
Mary Hooban – Looking after jerseys’
Secretaries in Sean Fleming’s office – Race night preparation and general administration,
Sean Mullaney – Good Friday table quiz
Pat Delaney – Race night
Fionán O’Sullivan – Golf Classic organisation
Christy Foran – use of premises for race night
ICA – use of hall for AGM
I would also like to thank all our supporters and ticket sellers without whom the Club could not exist. Support at our games has declined somewhat in recent years and I think it is imperative for each and every one of us to encourage support at our matches from our families and friends.
I wish to sympathise with all those who have suffered bereavements during the year.
Finally I would like to thank all those who have helped me during the year and wish the Club every success in 2007.
Is Mise,
Seán O’Fionnalaigh

Having qualified for the quarter final of the Senior Championship by beating Mountrath and Clonad, drawing with Kilcotton and losing to Portlaoise and Clough/Ballacolla, Castletown faced Camross again.
The dismissal of two players near the end sparked an incident involving players and supporters.
The game did not restart and the referee indicated that he had blown full time (despite video evidence showing that the full 30 minutes were not played in the second half).
Harsh penalties were handed out including a €5000 fine, exclusion from the 2007 Senior Hurling Championship, a ban on all players who played in the game from regrading, and the fixing of all adult games between Castletown and Camross for a 5 year period at neutral venues.

Castletown U21s, despite being denied the services of Slieve Bloom players, won the U21 "B" Championship. They beat St. Fintan's Raheen in the semi final and Clonad in a final played in Mountrath.
