Secretary's Report 1993
It gives me great pleasure to present this report as Secretary of Castletown GAA and to welcome everyone to this, our 20th Annual General Meeting.
It also gives me great pleasure to congratulate our Intermediate team on winning the Championships and League and Minor team on winning the Championship.
In all, the club played 40 competitive games, participating in the Senior, Intermediate, Junior B, Minor and Junior Football Championship and Leagues, as well as the U21 Championship. Of those 40 games, Castletown won 27, drew 4 and lost 9. A number of challenge games were also played.
The Intermediate team gave an impressive display against Ballinakill in the Championship final. In the League final we defeated Camross for the third time at this grade.
Our Seniors had a good run in the O' Brady Cup, being defeated in the final after a replay by Camross and we were unlucky against Clough/Ballacolla in the quarter final of the Championship. On behalf of the club I would like to thank Oliver Dollard, Bernie Ferns, John Bergin, Mick Cuddy and Frank Keenan for the time they put into both these teams. But there has to be more commitment from players towards training.
Our Minors had another good year. They completely outclassed Camross in the Championship final. This was a great win with five players on the team under the age of 15. They won their group in the league and were unlucky in the league final to be defeated by Camross by a point. A special word of thanks to Pat Phelan, Tim Keenan, Ollie Fogarty and Mick Cuddy for preparing this team and also thanks to the players for their commitment.
The U21 team were beaten in the first round by Camross.
The Junior B team had a good run in the Championship, beaten after a replay by Kyle. The team was raided during the league.
The Junior Football team were unlucky to be defeated by Camross in the semi final.
The club ran a very successful dance in the Community Centre on Easter Sunday night. I thank everyone who helped out and made it a success.
The club organised a celebration meal in the I.C.A. Hall for the Intermediate and Minor panels and the committee members. It was enjoyed by all. I would like to thank the I.C.A. for the work they put into providing the meal for the occasion. I also thank the ladies who help out with tea the nights before games.
The club also ran a successful table quiz on Good Friday, which I thank all who helped out and supported.
I congratulate the Juvenile Club on their performances during the year. In the U16 final they were outclassed but the U15 team were badly done by the referee. I would like to thank all adult members of the Juvenile Club for the work they have put in over the last year. I would also thank Slieve Bloom for their co-operation with us during the year.
I thank the selectors for the job each of them done for each team during the year. It's a hard and difficult job and it takes up alot of time. I would also thank Mick Cuddy, Mick Peters, Seán Mullaney and the committee for the help they gave me during the year. I also thank Jimmy and Mrs. Cuddy for the care they took in looking after the jersies. I would also like to thank the I.C.A. and James Moore for the use of their premises for meetings during the year and finally I would also thank those who supported us at matches in the past year.
As a club we cannot pass over the Minor League match against Borris in Ossory in Borris without some consideration. The scenes when the game was called off were very undesirable. We can not do much about the opposition or the referee but we should stand and carefully consider our own involvement. Alot of parents were quite upset and with the talent and progress being made in the club at underage level we should not ignore this concern.
Are we guilty of confusing hard hurling with dirty hurling? Is the focus on winning on the scoreboard showing enough in the club? Are we being dragged into a situation where we are turning alot of referees against us? Are we going the right way about making the best possible use of the talent that is developing in the club and can we hold those young players or even attract back some of the good minors or recent years who have drifted out of the game?
The history of the club seems to be that we are too good for Intermediate but not quite able to make it at Senior level. There is a strong volume of opinion about that we have now perhaps more talent than ever before but the question is do we players and mentors have enough between us to bring home a senior title over the next 3 years? What can we do which has not been done before to make this happen? We are not going to win a Senior title because we deserve it, we will only win if we put a team together and mentors behind it that are the best in the county.
For the club that is the challenge, what first step can we take tonight towards achieving our aim?
I wish the club every success for the coming year.
Is Mise,
Pádraig Ó Faoláin

Other Events during 1993
Eamon Kirwan captained the victorious Intermediate Championship and League winning team. David Cuddy captained the Minor team which won the Championship.

Please note that Castletown and Slieve Bloom amalgamated as Castletown Gaels for Senior Hurling. Therefore Castletown's first team would have been the Intermediate team that won the league and championship.
