Secretary's Report 1999
A chairde Ghael, tá fáilte róimh go leor anseo innie don Chruinniú Chinn Bhliana. This past year, 1999, will surely go down in Castletown GAA Club's history as being a very eventful one. The Clubhouse was built, the Senior Hurlers won the County Title and were Leinster Club Finalists. There were many memorable games, meetings, social occasions etc during the year but the most significant memory for me is of how the perception of the club is changing in the eyes of outside observers. We had, unfortunately, gained ourselves a reputation for being hot-headed and hard to handle but a new attitude during 1999 saw players, officials, mentors and supporters accept refereeing decisions whether right or wrong and get on with our own business.
A new style was set and others were beginning to take not. This proves to be the recipe for success and it makes me proud to be associated with a well organised high profile Club which is held in high esteem, and seen as a role model for other clubs, far and near.
Senior Hurling: The Senior Hurlers did themselves, their families, our club and our parish proud when, under the captaincy of John Lyons they regained the O' Keefe Cup on September 19th 1999. The team went on to defeat Faughs and St. Martin's before being defeated by Birr in the Leinster Club Final. On that occasion the players did their best and no more can be expected. They had put everything into the preparation and it was heart warming to see the lads could be happy with doing their best even if it wasn't enough. We have yet to play the Division One League Final v Camross.
Intermediate Hurling: The Intermediate team were under pressure in the League and having lost players to the Senior team this team was withdrawn from the Championship.
Junior B Hurlung: This team probably played more games than any other of our teams during 1999 and was unlucky to be beaten in both League and Championship Finals by Slieve Bloom. This team was made up of a few hardy annuals together with mostly Minor players and they are able to be congratulated on their performance.
U21 Hurling: This team seemed to have great potential but were taken by surprise by St. Fintan's Raheen in the first round.
Minor Hurling: What can one say about these Minor Hurlers of the past few years. They seemed invincible and were unlucky to be beaten by Portlaoise in a well contested County Final.
Junior Football: This competition gave some entertainment to our players in the early stages but we made an early exit from the Championship v Mountmellick having won a few rounds of the league.
Tournaments: We played in the Carlow 11s on May 1st and had a great day out, which was good for morale. We were beaten in the semi-final by Ballyhea of Cork.
I congratulate Captains, Selectors and all involved with team management during 1999. At this stage I would like to thank Tom Doheny, Dr. Lyons and Vinny Kelly for their help with teams on match days.
County Teams: Many of our players gave wholehearted displays on county teams at all levels and I congratulate them for their efforts.
The biggest venture in the Club's History was the building of the Clubhouse and I would like to thank especially my fellow officers and Committee who made it possible to take this Quantum Leap. I do not know of any other group of 5 people anywhere who would borrow £35,000 in their own names to finance a Club Development. I think it should be recorded that Mick Phelan (Chairman), Bernie Ferns (Vice Chairman), Monica Delaney (Secretary), John Delahunty (Treasurer) and John Costigan (Knockbrack) put great confidence in Castletown's Hurlers when that group took on the borrowing personally. I know that you our members wont let us down and you demonstrated that by supporting our 200 Club Draw and by your continued support for the Lotto.
In relation to the building I would like to thank our builder Tim Dooley, who did a splendid job on the building and I would like to return thanks to Seán Fleming T.D. for all the assistance he gave me in doing the successful application for the Lotto Grant. You all know by now that the Club got £17,000 which was a tremendous help with the cost of the building.
Socially we had the Dinner Dance in the Killeshin Hotel, the Golf Classic, Good Friday Table Quiz (for which I must thank Seán Mullaney, Secretary of the Juvenile Club, who acted as quizmaster), and the functions after finals and Club Championship matches.
Thanks to the Castletown Inn, to the ICA and especially Josie Coss. Thanks to the Community Centre for use of facilities and to James Moore whose digger is dispatched to the field on request.
Committee: We had eleven members who held 18 meetings during the year. These were well attended, enjoyable and very constructive. May I compliment the committee for their dedication and integrity.
Juvenile Club: May I return thanks and appreciation to our Juvenile Club which is run very efficiently.
Great credit is due to all who helped the Club in any way during the year, those who cut grass, washed jersies, sold tickets etc. May I return thanks to our many sponsors who contribute time and time again. I would also like to thank you the members for your participation in the activities of our Club and hope that you use all the Club's facilities to make Castletown a better place in which to live.
My hope is that 2000 will be as successful in all aspects as the previous year has been.
You are all familiar with the saying that the family which prays together stays together and to that end let me ask you all to attend at next Saturday's Mass in Castletown which will be offered for deceased members.
Guím rath Dé ar obair Cumann Lúthchleas Ghael, Bhaile an Chaisleáin so bhliain seo chugainn.
Is Mise,
Monica Ui Dubhshláine
