Secretary's Report 1982
It gives me great pleasure to present this, my first report as Secretary, at Castletown GAA Club's 9th Annual General Meeting and to welcome you all here today.
Though I have not the privilege of congratulating any of our teams on being successful during the year in any championships or tournaments, it should serve us better in 1983.
Senior Hurling: Although we had mixed fortunes in Senior Hurling Championship we played 7 games- winning 3 and losing 4. A greater effort in our preparation might have gained us more results.
Tournaments in Rathdowney and Slieve Bloom we won two and lost two and our most impressive game of the year was against Clonad in the Slieve Bloom Tournament where we lost narrowly.
Junior Hurling: In the league we beat Camross and lost to Mountrath. In the Championship we lost to Shanahoe.
Under 21 Hurling: In the Championship we beat Mountrath/Ballyfin but lost to Durrow in the next round.
Minor Hurling: In the Championship we beat Portlaoise and lost to Rathdowney in a very exciting game. In the Rural Championship we lost to Borris in Ossory in the semi final.
Football: This was undoubtedly our best year winning 3 games before eventually losing to Durrow who went on to win the Championship. With a greater effort and training we could have went further..
Juvenile: Our Juveniles went well again. They came through all their grades and contested 5 finals only to lose by the slimmest of margins in each of the finals.
I would like to pay tribute to Bro. Bernadine, Seán O' Sullivan, Paddy Cuddy, Pat Kirwan and Joe Heffernan for their dedication to the juveniles. Throughout the whole year again as has been said in previous years the support to these young lads could have been better. I hope in the year ahead that they will get more support from the senior members of our club and parents.
Social and Financial: Our Dinner Dance was run in conjunction with the Gun Club in the Pathe Hotel Roscrea in March.
We had two raffles during the year which kept the club going. We had a very successful Christmas Draw. I would like to thank all those who helped and sold tickets.
Congratulations: I would like to thank all those players who wore the county colours during 1982; Vinny Palmer, Gerry Phelan, Con Wall, Joe Dollard, John Bergin and Michael O' Sullivan. I hope it will not be too long before they win something with the county.
Also I would like to congratulate the Dollard Brothers on winning County Inter Firms medals with the "Builders" and on going on to reach the Leinster Final.
I would like to thank our Chairman Denis Wall, players for co-operation during the year and our supporters, our groundsman Joe Dunne for all his work, to Seán Brophy who was always ready to supply hurleys whenever they were needed at any time of the day or night.
Thanks to the De La Salle and I.C.A. for use of their halls.
I would like to congratulate members who got married during the year- namely Bernie Ferns, Seamie Hyland, Con Wall, Ollie Dollard and Tommy Donovan. I wish them every happiness in their new lives ahead (Loads of hurlers needed!).
Sympathy: I would like to sympathise with all club members who lost relatives during the year and also to all people of the Parish who died during 1982.
General Comment: So onto 1983, we in this little club of ours who want to get to the top of the tree. We will have to look for a new approach. We as officers and committee members will have to pursue our efforts to make our club great. Perhaps in 1983, or if not in 1984.
To the players I would say dedication, plenty of training and committment. Without this we have no hope of winning a County Championship.
In conclusion I would dearly love to see Castletown winning a Senior Hurling Championship in 1983 or if not then in the not too distant future.
Go raibh mile maith agaibh
