Castletown 4-7 Trumera 0-0
From Leinster Express
Michael O' Sullivan, with 1-3, was Castletown's top scorer in a rather easy win over Trumera in their Junior Football League tie at Borris in Ossory. Others who shared in the scoring were Bernie O' Keefe (1-1), Seamus O' Brien (1-1), P.J. Dunne (1-0), Paul Fitzpatrick and Gerry Gaughan (0-1 each).
Goalkeeper Michael O' Donovan, Liam O' Neill, Seán O' Connor, John Mulhall and Tom Sinnott were best for Trumera.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown made a winning start to the competitive year with a very comfortable win over a weak Trumera side in fairly good conditions at Borris in Ossory. Castletown were never in trouble though many scoring chances were thrown away and especially in the 2nd half when they were virtually camped in the Trumera half. Pat Delaney was never tested in goals and the backs were rarely troubled with Paul Fitzpatrick making a fine debut having transferred from Slieve Bloom. Michael O' Sullivan was the star of the forward division and Bernie O' Keefe had an impressive debut at midfield. It was the first football game in which Castletown held their opponents scoreless.
Castletown Team; Patrick Delaney, Paul Fitzpatrick, John Bergin, Bernie Ferns, Seán Mullaney, Gerry Gaughan, Ger Tynan, P.J. Mullaney, Bernie O' Keefe, Joe Kelly, Tommy Donovan, Mick O' Sullivan, P.J. Dunne, Seamus O' Brien, Francis Hegarty

Rural Minor Hurling Championship 13/4/83
Castletown/Slieve Bloom 6-8 Rosenallis 0-2
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown's minor hurling team in its first game of the year had a comfortable and convincing win over Rosenallis in the quarter final of the Rural Championship at Clonaslee in good dry conditions.
Rosenallis had opened the scoring with a point but soon Castletown with Thomas Cuddy in tremendous form at centre back took control and by half time had built up a 3-5 to 0-2 lead. Castletown added a further 3-3 in the second half while Rosenallis failed to score. Despite the margin of victory Castletown had to fight hard all the way as Rosenallis never gave up but Castletown had the better players with all giving of their best though some very young.

Ratheniska 2-4 Castletown 1-3
From Secretary's Notes;
Castletown lost its first competitive game of the season when the Junior Hurlers went down by four points to Ratheniska in their first game in the league. Castletown applied most of the early pressure but couldn't convert to scores. Ratheniska opened the scoring and by half time had 1-2, the goal coming from a long range shot.
Castletown failed to score in the first half.
On the resumption, Castletown again had the most possession but failed to make it tell. Nevertheless the teams were level 1-2 each midway through the 2nd half but Ratheniska had a goal and 2 points to Castletown's one point thereafter. The Castletown backline and midfield played reasonably well but the forward division failed to penetrate a close marking Rosenallis defence.
Castletown: Seamus Bergin, Fint Bergin, Tom Palmer, Mick Bergin, Joe Joe Dunne, Tom Deegan, Seán Mullaney, Gerry Gaughan (0-1 free), Tommy Donovan (1-0), Vivian Cahill, Mick Cuddy, Paddy Dollard (0-2), Seamus Fitzpatrick, Donie Doheny, P.J. Dunne

O' Brady Cup 17/4/83
Castletown 3-9 Clonad 0-9
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown's senior hurlers, in their first competitive game of the season had a good win over Clonad in a tough but never really exciting game in the first round of the O' Brady Cup in Mountrath. Castletown fielded at full strength. Clonad opened the scoring with a point but Paul Dollard had a goal shortly after and thereafter Castletown never looked like being behind and led 2-4 to 0-5 at half time. Castletown continued in control in the second half, and the defence though under heavy pressure, held out very well with John Bergin at full back and Gerry Phelan in his new role at left half back playing particularly well.
Clonad were reduced to 14 men when they had a player sent off for striking Mick Boyhan halfway through the second half. By this time Castletown were well in control and ended with 9 points to spare.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, Mick Boyhan, John Bergin, Seamie Hyland, Paddy Hegarty, Con Wall, Gerry Phelan, P.J. Mullaney (1-0), Vinny Palmer (0-1), Bernie O' Keefe (0-1), Joe Dollard (0-1), Mick O Sullivan (0-6, 1f), Paul Dollard (1-0), Kieran Phelan (1-0), Joe Phelan

Rural Minor Hurling Championship Semi Final 20/4/83
Camross 1-14 Castletown/Slieve Bloom 0-6
From Leinster Express
Camross, who have won titles in every grade except minor, qualified for their first Rural MHC Final in ten years, when they surprisingly defeated Castletown Slieve Bloom on Wednesday at Borris in Ossory.
At half time Camross led by 1-3 to 0-4 after Fint Lalor, their top scorer, shot a good goal from a free midway through the first half.
The second half produced some of the best hurling seen at this grade for a long time. Camross dominated centrefield with Pierce Higgins and Michael Dooley in fine form. Fint Lalor at centre forward was in fine form shooting 1-6 of his sides total.
Camross had other stars in goalie John Lalor, Pat Delaney at full back, Michael Kennedy and Brian Grady formed a fine full line of defence. The half line was the best line of view with Tom Dooley and Des Gilmartin particularly prominent. Pierce Higgins at midfield and in attack apart from Lalor others to shine were Neilus Delaney, Pat Hogan and Seán Cuddy.
For Castletown, none played better than their centre back Tom Cuddy, Ray Coss in goals, Pat Bergin, T.J. Young, Joe Joe Dunne, Noel McCormack at centrefield. In attack only Pat Dollard, John O' Sullivan and Tom Fitzpatrick made any headway against a resolute Camross defence.

Camross for Final!
Camross, who managed only two points of an interval lead, got well on top in the second period to qualify for the Laois Rural Minor Hurling Championship Final against Colt, Mountrath or last year's runners-up Ballacolla.
From Secretary's Notes
One week after their first round victory, Castletown bowed out of the Rural MHC, losing heavily to Camross at the semi-final stage. The first half was evenly contested and Castletown were 3 points up before Camross opened their scoring. Camross came more into the game and led 1-3 to 0-4 at half time. In the second half Camross had scored 0-5 before Castletown had 0-1 but hopes of a Castletown revival faded as Camross added point after point and had a rather comfortable victory in the end. Though they tried hard, Castletown could not strike form in the second half and were it not for a good goalkeeping display from Ray Coss and good defensive work from T.J. Young at full back the defeat would have been heavier. The forwards made little use of their opportunities.
Castletown Team; Ray Coss, Frank Nolan, T.J. Young, Paul Bergin, Joe Joe Dunne, Tom Cuddy (0-2), John Phelan, Noel McCormack, Pat Cuddy, Liam Coss, Paddy Dollard (0-2), Vincent Fitzpatrick, Maurice Fitzpatrick, John McCormack (0-1), John O' Sullivan (0-1)
Scorers Camross: Fint Lalor 1-6, Pierce Higgins 0-3, Neilus Delaney 0-2, Seán Cuddy 0-1, Pat Hogan 0-1

Castletown 1-13 Borris in Ossory 1-9
From Leinster Express
Castletown with four points to spare
Castletown had four points to spare when beating Borris in Ossory 1-13 to 1-9 in a very exciting Laois Senior Hurling Championship tie at Mountrath on Saturday evening. There was little between the sides in the first half and Castletown led by two points 1-7 to 1-5 at the break.
At the three quarter stage Castletown were still in front by two points and following an incident a player from Borris in Ossory was sent off. The last fifteen minutes produced first class hurling and Castletown increased their lead to emerge deserving winners 1-13 to 1-9/
Joe Dollard got Castletown away to a good start when pointing a free in the first minute but the sides were level two minutes later when Pat O' Brien shot a similar score for Borris. Joe Phelan and Pat O' Brien (free) exchanged points before Castletown regained the lead and had four points in a row from Joe Dollard, Mick O' Sullivan, two from frees, and P.J. Mullaney at the end of the first quarter.
Pat O' Brien pointed Borris free and Joe Phelan (Borris) added a goal to equalise in the 22nd minute. Paul Dollard restored the Castletown lead with a good point and Con Wall put them four in front when he shot a goal from a free. Four minutes before the break, Pat O' Brien reduced the lead when pointing a free and Willie Whelan added another to leave Castletown leading 1-7 to 1-5 at the break.
Into the second half points were exchanged between Mick O' Sullivan (free) and John Phelan in the first five minutes. Paul Dollard and Willie Kirwan then exchanged points with two each. Castletown added a point from an O' Sullivan free and further points from Paul Dollard and Vinny Palmer completed their total. Borris had the last score of the game as Pat O' Brien pointed a free to leave Castletown deserving winners 1-13 to 1-9.
Cha Palmer was outstanding in goal for Castletown and Pat Hegarty stood out on the full back line. Con Wall at centre half and Gerry Phelan and Seamie Hyland completed a great half back line. Vinny Palmer was outstanding at midfield and along with P.J. Mullaney gave the winners a decisive edge at midfield.
Mick O' Sullivan was deadly accurate from frees and along with Joe and Paul Dollard took the honours in an attack that wasted few openings.
Borris in Ossory had an outstanding full back in Pat Whelan and along with Niall Fagan, Kevin Dollard, Seán Hanrahan and goalie P.J. Butler were all very prominent in defence. Willie Kirwan tried hard to swing the issue his side's way at midfield. Pat O' Brien, who contributed five points, and Joe Phelan were most prominent in an attack that was well held by the Castletown backs.
From Laois Nationalist
This local derby in Mountrath produced typical fervour and a fair degree of good hurling. Eventually Castletown wore down their opponents who had Kevin Dollard sent off for a minor indiscretion in the second half.
Borris in Ossory had slightly the better of the opening exchanges and a Joe Phelan goal left them 1-3 to 0-5 ahead after twenty minutes. However Con Wall landed a Castletown goal from 75 metres shortly after and this enabled the blue and whites to lead by 1-7 to 1-5 at the break.
Matters were quite evenly matched in the second half until Paul Dollard with three successive points gave Castletown breathing space. Borris in Ossory were unable to overcome the handicap of losing a player and were lucky to be so close at the final whistle.
The foundations for Castletown's win were laid by a great half back line of Gerry Phelan, Con Wall and Seamus Hyland. Others to shine for them were Cha Palmer, Pat Hegarty, Vinny Palmer, Paul Dollard and Mick O' Sullivan.
For Borris in Ossory best were Pat Whelan, Kevin Dollard, Pat O' Brien, Joe Phelan and William Kirwan.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown made a great start in the SHC with a four point win over old rivals Borris in Ossory in the first round. This eagerly awaited contest never had any brilliant hurling but was very evenly contested. Castletown went into an early lead with a Mick O' Sullivan point and were 0-6 to 0-3 ahead when Borris had an equalising goal. However, shortly after things fell in Castletown's favour with a long range free from Con Wall free dropping into the net and at half time the "Village" led 1-7 to 1-5.
Castletown maintained this lead into the second half and consolidated it with some good points but should have been even further ahead at the final whistle as they dominated for most of the second half.
This was a great morale boosting victory though many of the players never struck top form. Seamie Hyland had his usual rock solid game. P.J. Mullaney played well at midfield and Mick O' Sullivan in super form was a constant thorn in the Borris defence while Paul Dollard had a very good second half scoring 3 successive points at a vital stage. The rest tried very hard and played reasonably well.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, Mick Boyhan, John Bergin, Paddy Hegarty, Seamie Hyland, Con Wall (1-0f), Gerry Phelan, P.J. Mullaney (0-1), Vinny Palmer (0-1), Mick O' Sullivan (0-5f), Joe Dollard (0-1), Bernie O' Keefe, Paul Dollard (0-4), Kieran Phelan, Joe Phelan (0-1)

Castletown 2-5 Colt 1-7
From Leinster Express
A point from a free by Gerry Gaughan with the last puck of the game gave Castletown two valuable points in the JHL at Shanahoe on Sunday.
The game throughout was close and at half time Castletown led 2-2 to 0-5 thanks to two well taken goals by Viv Cahill and Pat Delaney.
Colt came more into the game in the second half thanks to some accurate free taking by Lar Scully. With two minutes to go Colt full forward grabbed a pass from brother George who had come out of goal and hand passed to the net for the equaliser.
However Castletown rallied and earned a free which Gaughan placed between the posts for the winner which they just about deserved.
Castletown had an excellent goalkeeper in Seamus Bergin, Tom Palmer at full back, Mick Bergin, Gerry Gaughan at centre back, Edmund Dunne, Seamus Fitzpatrick, Ollie Donovan, P.J. Dunne, Paddy Dollard and Vivian Cahill were others to shine well for Castletown.
For Colt, George Dalton had an excellent hour in goals. Donal Whelan at full back, John Sinnott, Lar Scully, Kevin Galvin and John Dalton.
From Laois Nationalist
With just a slight edge in the matter of experience, Castletown held on to score a one point win over Colt in an exciting Junior Hurling League tie at Shanahoe. While Castletown were the better balance side, Colt had four very prominent players in George Dalton, Martin Sinnott, Paul Murphy and Denis Whelan.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown earned their first two points of the JHL when Gerry Gaughan with a point from a free in the last minute gave Castletown victory by the narrowest of margins. Castletown had led for most of the game but Colt had equalised with a goal minutes from the end.
Colt were first to score but shortly after Castletown had a goal from Vivian Cahill and thereafter were never behind and led 2-2 to 0-5 at half time. Castletown and Colt had two points each before Colt equalised with a late goal but then Gerry Gaughan gave Castletown a deserved victory.
Castletown, as a team never played great but P.J. Dunne, Ger Gaughan, Seamus Fitzpatrick and Vivian Cahill gave good displays.
Castletown Team; Seamus Bergin, Edmund Dunne, Tom Palmer, Fint Bergin, Joe Joe Dunne, Ollie Donovan, P.J. Dunne, Gerry Gaughan (0-2f), Tommy Donovan, Seamus Fitzpatrick (0-1), Mick Cuddy, Vivian Cahill (1-0), Mick McRedmond, Patrick Delaney (1-0), Paddy Dollard (0-2)

Portlaoise 1-5 Castletown 1-3
From Leinster Express
Portlaoise hold out against Castletown
This game was originally fixed for Borris in Ossory. It was then refixed for Mountrath. On Friday it was transferred back to Borris in Ossory because Mountrath was unplayable. On Saturday morning it became known that Borris was also unplayable and the game was refixed for Clonaslee. And even in Clonaslee there were some doubts as to whether or not the game would go ahead because many parts of the pitch were in a soggy condition.
But go on it did and full marks to both sides who rose above the dreadful conditions and treated the small attendance to a cracking tie. Portlaoise had a dream start when corner forward Seamus Plunkett lashed home a goal but this was cancelled by a similar score at the opposite end by Kieran Phelan after ten minutes.
This helped Castletown turn over with a one point advantage at 1-3 to 1-2. The scene was set for a thrilling second half and that it was. Both sides had equal chances but it was Portlaoise who snapped up most and points from John Bohane, Liam Bergin and Joe Keenan gave their side the valuable points with Castletown failing to raise a flag in the second period.
Best for the winners were Philip Rochford in goals, Noel Rigney, Seán Dunne and John Bohane in the backs, John Taylor and Joe Keenan at midfield and Jimmy Harding, Liam Bergin and Gerry Browne in attack.
For Castletown Cha Palmer in goal, Pat Hegarty, Con Wall and Gerry Phelan in the backs. Vinny Palmer and P.J. Mullaney at midfield and Joe Dollard, Mick O' Sullivan and Kieran Phelan in the forwardss were to the fore.
From Secretary's Notes
The second round SHC game which was originally fixed for Mountrath, then changed to Borris and then again to Clonaslee through flooding was a tough and close encounter with the county champions. Portlaoise came through with 2 points to spare. Castletown suffered two early set backs - a soft goal conceded in the unsettled opening minutes and the loss of P.J. Mullaney with a hand injury.
Nevertheless Castletown played well after and despite atrocious underfoot conditions there was some good hurling. The marking was very tight but Castletown were 1-3 to 1-2 ahead at half time. Castletown, despite at least an equal share of possession and still playing well failed to score in the second half while Portlaoise had 3 points. This was a game which could have been won as Castletown hurled well but failed to convert possession into scores and conditions hampered their style.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, Mick Boyhan, John Bergin, Paddy Hegarty, Joe Dollard, Con Wall, P.J. Mullaney, Bernie O' Keefe, Gerry Phelan (0-1), Vinny Palmer, Mick O' Sullivan (0-2), Paul Dollard (1-0), Kieran Phelan, Joe Phelan

Castletown 2-8 St Manman's 2-4
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown recorded their second victory in the Junior Football League with a four point margin to spare over St Manman's in a close game at Mountmellick. Castletown got off to a flyer when P.J. Dunne goaled in the first attack. However, things were not as easy after, and while Castletown had the better of the play, scores were not as frequent. Castletown remained ahead and led 2-4 to 2-2 at half time.
St Manman's brought the scores level midway through the second half but then Castletown improved their game and scored 4 points without reply for a deserved victory. The Castletown backline was shaky until John Bergin came on at the back. Gerry Gaughan played well all through and Tom Deegan made a good return to the game at midfield. The forwards found it difficult enough to penetrate the Manman's defence but improved as the game progressed.
Castletown Team; Patrick Delaney, Con Wall, Bernie Ferns, Seamus O' Brien, Seán Mullaney, Gerry Gaughan (0-3), Bill Delaney, Tom Deegan, Bernie O' Keefe, Larry Dunne, Joe Dollard (0-2), Mick O' Sullivan (0-2), P.J. Dunne (2-0), Paddy Hegarty (0-1), Vinny Palmer

Borris in Ossory 4-12 Castletown 1-3
From Leinster Express
Borris in a hurry
Borris in Ossory scored a very convincing 4-12 to 1-3 victory over Castletown in a one sided Laois Junior B Hurling Championship tie at Shanahoe on Saturday evening and so avenged the defeat of their seniors a couple of weeks ago.
Played under bad weather conditions with heavy rain falling for most of the first half Borris led 4-8 to no score at half time.
Although Castletown did improve in the second half when the rain eased off, they had too much leeway to make up and Borris ran out convincing winners by a wide margin of four goals and twelve points to a goal and three.
Michael Dooley was outstanding in goal for the winners who had other solid defenders in John Cummins, Patsy Sydes, Denis Breen and Eric Abraham who stood out at centre back.
Conor Hyland and Seamus Kavanagh had the better of exchanges at midfield with Joe Doheny, Ed Sheeran and Seán Ryan contributing the bulk of the winning total in attack.
Castletown, after a shaky start, were best served in defence by Tom Palmer, Tom Deegan and Oliver Donovan. At midfield Gerry Gaughan and Seán Mullaney held their own with their opponents for long periods but apart from Paddy Dollard and Francis Hegarty the forwards failed to impress.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown bowed out of the Junior Hurling Championship at the first round stage, being well and truly beaten by a better all round Borris team in wet unfavourable conditions at Shanahoe. Borris completely dominated the first half and scored 4-8 while Castletown failed to score. Matters improved in the 2nd half for Castletown but Borris were never in any danger - though only scoring 4 points while Castletown scored 1-3. This was a poor performance by Castletown especially in the first half. The back line was very porous and midfield did not link up well with a very subdued forward line. Ollie Donovan, Tommy Deegan and Paddy Dollard performed best.
Castletown Team; Seamus Bergin, Joe Joe Dunne, Tom Palmer, Edmund Dunne, P.J. Dunne, Tom Deegan (1-0), Ollie Donovan, Seán Mullaney, Gerry Gaughan, Vivian Cahill, Francis Hegarty, Paddy Dollard (0-2), Fint Bergin, Mick Cuddy, Seamus Fitzpatrick (0-1)

Camross 3-13 Castletown/Slieve Bloom 0-8
From Leinster Express
Camross too good for area side
Camross U21s had fourteen points to spare over Castletown/Slieve Bloom at Borris in Ossory on Sunday evening last. Leading by 2-7 to 0-4 at the interval the losers seldom looked like seriously threatening to halt the Camross lads.
The highlights of the first half was the display of Tommy Delaney who had a real stormer when he scored 2-4, 2-2 of which was from play. However, he blotted his copy book in the second half when he incurred the wrath of the referee and received his marching orders. Indeed this was a testy enough tie with four players in all being ordered to the line.
Best for Camross were P Carroll, P Moore and S Doran in defence, Pierce Higgins at midfield, while in attack Tommy Delaney was brilliant until his departure and he got able assistance from Fint Scully and Fint Lalor.
Best for Castletown were John Bergin at full back, Joe Dollard at centre back, while in attack Mick Sullivan, Tom Cuddy and Noel Phelan did well.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown suffered its second defeat in two days when losing very badly to Camross in the first round of the U21 HC in a poor, sometimes bad tempered, game in good conditions at Borris in Ossory. Castletown/Slieve Bloom opened the scoring through a Paddy Dollard point but this was followed shortly after by a soft Camross goal. Camross had slightly the better of exchanges in the first half and led 2-7 to 0-5 at half time.
Hopes of a Castletown revival faded as the second half went on with most of the team giving below par performances and being unable to prevent Camross from picking off their points. The much needed goal for Castletown never came and the game was over as a contest long before the final whistle with Castletown only scoring 3 points in a dull second half. Play was held up following an incident between Benny Conroy and Tommy Delaney and they were both sent off. The referee tried unsuccessfully to clear the side lines and the game continued.
Camross' Corrie Culleton was sent off later and before the end so was Paddy Dollard.
Castletown/Slieve Bloom performed badly never getting really into the game though Dan Phelan, Vivian Cahill and Mick O' Sullivan played well.
Castletown Team; Liam Coss, Dan Phelan, John Bergin, T.J. Young, Paul Fitzpatrick (S/B), Joe Dollard, Noel Phelan (S/B), Tom Cuddy (S/B), Vivian Cahill (0-1), Mick O' Sullivan (0-5f), Francis Hegarty, Benny Conroy (S/B), Michael Delaney (S/B), Mick Cuddy, Paddy Dollard (0-2)

Ballinakill 2-6 Castletown 1-4
From Leinster Express
Ballinakill qualified to meet Portlaoise in the JFC quarter final when had 5 points to spare over Castletown at Shanahoe.
At half time Ballinakill led 1-4 to 0-1 thanks to an early J.P. Owens goal. Castletown fought back and Tom Deegan shot a good goal, but Ballinakill had a like score by Ger O' Shaughnessy and went on to win.
Ballinakill were best served by Eddie Stapleton, Tom Dunne, Michael Walsh, Peter Horan, P.J. Brennan and J.P. Owens.
For Castletown, Paddy Hegarty, Seán Mullaney, Gerry Gaughan, Paul Fitzpatrick, Tom Deegan, Bernie Ferns and Michael O' Sullivan tried hardest.
From Laois Nationalist
One must pay tribute to both sides for rising against the the conditions in this exciting Laois Junior Football Championship tie at Shanahoe. Ballinakill after an early exchange of points firmly established themselves with a P.J. Brennan goal entering the second quarter and went on to lead 1-4 to 0-1 at the interval.
J.P. O' Meara, Peter Hamm and P.J. Brennan having added points, Michael O' Sullivan pointed a Castletown penalty on the restart when a goal was needed and it was Matt Simms who stretched the Ballinakill lead with a goal at the end of the third quarter. With Castletown undeservedly nine points down Tom Deegan scored Castletown's goal near the end.
Ballinakill owe most to Mick Dunphy, Tom Dunne, Willie Phelan, Mick Walsh, Ned Stapleton, Liam O' Shaughnessy and P.J. Brennan.
Goalkeeper Pat Delaney, Ger Gaughan, Con Wall, Tom Deegan, Mick O' Sullivan, Vinny Palmer and Pat Hegarty were best for Castletown.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown went out of the Junior Football Championship at the first round stage and thus ended their title hopes which were high after the good performances of last year. It was a case of third time lucky for this game to take place. It was originally fixed for April 17th but postponed due to the death of Mr. Maybury of Mountrath at the venue.
It was refixed for April 27th but while referee and both teams were present it was postponed due to thunder and lightening and a continuous downpour. Conditions were bad in Shanahoe but the game went ahead and in the first half Ballinakill completely dominated and led by 1-4 to 0-1. Castletown improved immensely in the second half and had the majority of the possession but failed to convert. Castletown won a penalty when Charlie Phelan was fouled but Mick O' Sullivan's shot went over the bar.
Ballinakill scored an opportunist's goal which gave them an eight point lead. Castletown had a goal shortly after and hopes rose again but the much sought goals never came and despite many chances the margin was never less than 5 points.
Pat Delaney could not be faulted in goals, Paul Fitzpatrick had a great second half in defence and Bernie Ferns was reliable all through. Midfield was very weak in the first half but improved in the second and the forwards lacked in scoring skill though they tried very hard. Paddy Hegarty played his heart out all through.
Castletown Team; Pat Delaney, Con Wall, Paul Fitzpatrick, Bernie Ferns, Tommy Donovan, Gerry Gaughan, Seán Mullaney, Gerry Phelan, Tommy Deegan (1-1), Bernie O' Keefe (0-1), Vinny Palmer, Mick O' Sullivan (0-2), P.J. Dunne, Paddy Hegarty, Seamus O' Brien.

Durrow scored a surprise 2-13 to 0-7 victory over Castletown in a Laois SHC tie at Abbeyleix on Saturday evening. They led 2-8 to 0-4 at half time and although Castletown improved in the closing period they had too much leeway to make up and Durrow ran out convincing winners of a game that failed to live up to expectations.
Durrow got away to a great start and had two early points from Martin Brophy from play and a point from a sixty five by Shem Phelan. Castletown replied with a point each from Gerry Phelan and Joe Dollard after ten minutes.
Philip Monnelly then had a point for Durrow and Bobby Campion a goal before Mick O' Sullivan and Dollard shared a brace of points for the losers.
Durrow then took complete control when Bobby Campion shot his second goal and Martin Brophy shot a point from play and two frees with Seán Murphy adding a further point to lead 2-8 to 0-4 at the break.
The second half was more evenly contested and although Durrow only scored 0-5 they were always in control. Although Castletown had an early point by Paul Dollard, Durrow replied two points by Martin Brophy and a point by Philip Monnelly to lead 2-11 to 0-5 at the end of the third quarter.
The final fifteen minutes saw Mick O' Sullivan and Gerry Phelan sharing a brace of points and Tom Lennon and Martin Brophy replying with a point each for Durrow who were very convincing winners 2-13 to 0-7.
Morgan Kelly who suffered a recent injury was back in top class form in goal for Durrow. Tom Flynn, Shem Phelan and Ger Brophy formed the back bone of a defence that kept them at bay for long periods. Tom Lennon and Phil Monnelly ruled the roost at midfield and laid on a good supply to an attack that made full use of their opportunities. Martin Brophy with a personal tally of 0-8 was outstanding in the half line of attack. Bobby Campion at full forward took his chances well, with Seán Murphy and P.J. Phelan also prominent.
Castletown, who failed to produce the form displayed recently against county champions Portlaoise, were best served in defence by Cha Palmer in goal, Mick Peters at full back, Seamie Hyland and Con Wall in the half line, Joe Dollard and Vinny Palmer tried hard at midfield but apart from Mick O' Sullivan, Gerry Phelan and Paul Dollard the forwards had an off day.
From Laois Nationalist
Durrow, one of the most talented sides in Laois in recent years only to falter at the final fences, may have come good at last. On Saturday at Abbeyleix, in dreadful underfoot conditions, they produced a fine first half to completely upset Castletown's SHC ambitions.
Martin Brophy gave them the lead after 5 minutes, one which they were never to lose, while going through to the interval 2-8 to 0-4 up.
The second half was much closer but Brophy and Mick O' Sullivan exchanged points in the first twelve minutes. Castletown now tried desperately to get back into the game. Their defence stood firm and Durrow's next score did not come until the 24th minute of the half by Martin Brophy.
Durrow, who fought off relegation last season, must be happy. They have gone three games without defeat, losing one bout to the county champions in the first round.
Morgan Kelly, Tom Flynn, P.J. Kelly, Willie Phelan, Seamus Phelan, Martin Brophy, Bob Campion, Seán Murphy and P.J. Phelan most prominent for the winners.
The scoreboard did not do justice to a fine effort by Castletown for whom Cha Palmer, Mick Peters, Mick Boyhan, John Bergin, Seamus Hyland, Joe Dollard, Vinny Palmer, Mick O' Sullivan, Kieran Phelan and Gerry Phelan impressed.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown's chances of qualifying for the final stages of the SHC suffered a serious set back when its hurlers lost their second game of the season leaving them with only 2 points after 3 games. They were beaten by a faster, superior Durrow side in wet underfoot conditions at a muddy Abbeyleix. Being 10 points down at half time we never looked like making a second half comeback.
Durrow laid the foundation for their victory in that first half getting a better grip on the game as it went on and adding 2 goals to their 8 earlier points towards the end of the first half during which Castletown only managed 4 points.
This margin was too much to make up for Castletown and it wasn't reduced as Durrow scored 0-5 in the second half, to Castletown's 0-3.
Castletown were outclassed for most of this game by a superior side which were faster to the ball and distributed quickly. The full back line saved the "Village" from a bigger defeat with a sound display but while players in the other departments tried hard, little was achieved. Castletown ended the game with 14 men as Paddy Hegarty was sent off late in the game.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, Mick Boyhan, Mick Peters, John Bergin, Paddy Hegarty, Con Wall, Seamie Hyland, Joe Dollard (0-1), Vinny Palmer, Gerry Phelan (0-1), Kieran Phelan, Mick O' Sullivan (0-4f), Paul Dollard (0-1), Oliver Dollard, Bernie O' Keefe

Cullohill Senior Hurling Tournament 29/5/83
Castletown 3-20 Galmoy 2-6
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown made a welcome return to winning ways with a very convincing win over Galmoy from Kilkenny in the first round of the Cullohill Tournament. Castletown gave a very good exhibition of hurling with the whole team playing well against a side who defeated them in last year's Rathdowney Tournament. Castletown dominated the game from the start and led all the way. The forwards picked off some very good points and Castletown had a 3-10 to 1-3 interval lead. Castletown were never in any danger in the second half and added 0-10 to Galmoy's 1-3 and so ended with 17 points to spare. This was a good overall performance but Kieran Phelan played very well in his new role at centre back as did Con Wall at centre forward and Vinny Palmer in the corner.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, Mick Boyhan, John Bergin, Tom Palmer, Joe Dollard, Kieran Phelan, Seamie Hyland, Paddy Hegarty (0-1), Gerry Phelan (1-0), Bernie O' Keefe, Con Wall (0-6, 1pen), Mick O' Sullivan (0-8, 3f), Paul Dollard, Oliver Dollard (0-2), Vinny Palmer (2-3)

From Leinster Express
Castletown assert superiority
Castletown asserted their superiority in the second half of this Laois SHC tie at Mountrath on Sunday last to take both points despite a spirited display by the area side in what was a close and hard fought game with tempers inclined to fray at times.
Castletown took the lead when Mick O' Sullivan pointed from play and this was added to by Gerry Phelan, also from play.
Park/Ratheniska got back on level terms with points from Liam Greene and Brendan Delaney before Paul Dollard shot a Castletown goal in the 20th minute. Mick O' Sullivan pointed a free to edge his side four points clear. However, Park/Ratheniska were back on level terms by the interval thanks to a John Wall goal and a point by Liam Greene to leave the scores reading at 1-3 each.
Castletown started the second half in determined fashion and really took the fight to Park/Ratheniska despite losing inter-county player, Joe Dollard, early in the first period for a foul on an opponent. The winners shot two points to take the lead in the opening stages of the second period before an Oliver Dollard goal put them five points clear. This was stretched to six points when O' Sullivan again pointed before Liam Downey halved the deficit with a well taken goal.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown made amends for last year's defeat by Park/Ratheniska and in winning this championship game earned a vital pair of championship points which kept them in contention for qualification. This was a tough, hard fought game with Joe Dollard being sent off very early in the game and Castletown had it all to do to win with 14 men.
The sides were level 1-5 apiece at half time but Castletown got on top in the second half and went into a seven point lead. Ratheniska scored a goal (their only score of the second half) with about 10 minutes to go and so put heavy pressure on the Castletown defence but they held on gallantly and when Kieran Phelan pointed a '65' Castletown went 5 points ahead and the game was as good as over.
This was a good display by Castletown though and victory was hard won. The game was tough with very little open play and Castletown adapted well when reduced to 14 men. Kieran Phelan was outstanding at centre back, as was Seamie Hyland alongside him. Gerry Phelan gave a great display around the middle and Paddy Hegarty put in a great hour's work while Bernie O' Keefe, who came back into defence when Joe Dollard was sent off, played very well and relieved pressure time after time. Mick O' Sullivan was the best in a forward line which found the going tough.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, Mick Boyhan, Mick Peters, John Bergin, Joe Dollard, Kieran Phelan (0-1, 65m), Seamie Hyland, Paddy Hegarty, Gerry Phelan (0-2), Bernie O' Keefe, Con Wall (0-2, 0-1pen), Mick O' Sullivan (0-4, 0-3f), Paul Dollard (1-0), Oliver Dollard (1-0), Vinny Palmer (0-1)
Park/Ratheniska Team; P Morrin, Liam Cushen, J.J. McDonald, M. McDonald, M. Cahill, S. Cushen, D. Kearns, Lar Cushen, J. Brennan (0-1), L. Downey (1-0), L. Greene (0-3), L. Wall, J. Wall (1-0), B. Delaney (0-1), J. Brennan

O' Brady Cup 7/6/83
Camross 5-15 Castletown 2-7
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown, after the joy of a good victory on Sunday last were brought quickly down to earth when completely overwhelmed by Camross in a one sided game in good conditions at Borris. Camross struck very early and built up a good lead and at one stage led by 1-8 to 0-1. However, Castletown pulled this deficit back with Mick O' Sullivan scoring 2 points and a goal from a 21 yard free to leave the half time score 1-8 to 1-3 in favour of Camross. So despite being outhurled for much of the opening half Castletown were still in contention.
They remained so for about 10 minutes of the second half but then Camross struck with an avalanche of scores and the rest of the game was a mere formality and Camross ran out easy winners with Castletown scoring 1-4 to 4-7 for Camross in the period.
This was a generally poor performance by Castletown who had to line out without Joe Dollard (suspended), Conleth Wall and P.J. Mullaney (injured). Cha Palmer could not be faulted in the Castletown goals and Mick Peters had a great game at full back. Bernie O' Keefe and Vinny Palmer played their hearts out and Mick O' Sullivan had a great game in the forward line scoring 2-6 of the 2-7 total.
Overall, however, Castletown seemed to lack the commitment, fitness and skills to match the power of Camross.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, John Bergin, Mick Peters, Bernie Ferns, Mick Boyhan Kieran Phelan, Seamie Hyland, Paddy Hegarty, Gerry Phelan, Bernie O' Keefe, Vinny Palmer (0-1), Mick O Sullivan (2-6), Paul Dollard, Oliver Dollard, Gerry Gaughan

Kilcotton 7 a side Tournament 12/6/83
From Secretary's Notes
A Castletown side competed in the Kilcotton 7 a side tournament but were only involved in one game as they were defeated by Errill in the first game on the programme. Castletown hadn't it's best available side on duty - some didn't turn up and some were being spared for a tournament game later that day.
Nevertheless, Castletown were ahead of Errill after a wind assisted first half but their six point lead wasn't enough and Errill took over and maintained the lead in the 2nd half.

Cullohill Senior Hurling Tournament 12/6/83
Ballyfin 3-16 Castletown 2-9
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Ballyfin in the semi final of the Cullohill Tournament. Castletown were without Con Wall (injury), Joe Dollard (suspended) and Paddy Hegarty but should have done better than they did as conditions were ideal.
Ballyfin dominated the first half and led by 2-9 to 0-6 at half time. They added a further two points on the resumption but then Castletown had a period of domination and 2 goals put them back into contention. However, despite a good supply, the Castletown forwards made little headway while Ballyfin scored regularly and the men in green clinched the game with a series of late scores including a goal. Overall, this was a mysteriously poor showing by Castletown who hurled in spasms. The backs and especially goalie Joe Phelan and the full back line played soundly while elsewhere only Gerry Phelan, Vinny Palmer and Mick O' Sullivan were impressive.
Castletown Team; Joe Phelan, Mick Boyhan, Mick Peters, John Bergin, Seán Mullaney, Kieran Phelan, Seamie Hyland, P.J. Mullaney, Bernie O' Keefe, Vinny Palmer, Gerry Phelan, Mick O' Sullivan, Gerry Gaughan, Oliver Dollard, Paul Dollard

Hurling Challenge 21/6/83
Castletown v Mountmellick
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown and Mountmellick played a useful challenge game in Castletown with the visitors coming out on top by about 3 points. Castletown, short many regulars, didn't play well though Joe Phelan in goals and Paddy Hegarty and Seamie Hyland hurled well as did Bernie Ferns at corner ack. It was a useful work out for Castletown who have a vital championship game on Sunday next.

Senior Hurling Championship 26/6/83
Castletown 2-16 Cullohill 3-5
From Leinster Express
Strong finish by Castletown
In a Laois Hurling Championship tie which produced plenty of good hurling at sun drenched Abbeyleix it is hard to credit that only a point separated the sides some minutes into the second half, yet top form Castletown had gone ahead by 11 points when Cullohill scored their third goal just at full time.
Castletown, who came from behind with a Paul Dollard goal near the interval, now have 6 points from 5 games, while Cullohill, who deserve a better return, have yet to gain their first championship point.
Liam Spencer and Pat Bolger raised hopes with 2 early goals on Sunday as points were swapped Michael O' Sullivan reduced the Castletown deficit with a goal midway through the half. Paul Dollard scored a second goal near the interval to give Castletown a lead they never lost 2-6 to 2-4.
Mick Dunphy, who had three points, cut arrears to a point on the restart but a resurgence was not to be, and it was Castletown who went on to treat their supporters to a vintage display scoring 0-10 without reply, a feat not often achieved in senior grade.
Cullohill, to their credit, never gave up, and some minutes after the Castletown defence had saved Mick Dunphy's close free the latter placed Jack Doran who shot to the net for the last score of an enjoyable game.
Both goalies, Cha Palmer and Andy Doran did well. The Castletown man got fine cover from Pat Hegarty, John Bergin and Bernie O' Keefe while Michael O' Sullivan, Con Wall and Paul Dollard took the honours in attack. But it was the success, especially in the second half, of Gerry Phelan and P.J. Mullaney at midfield that played a major role in this Castletown win and both helped in the scoring.
John Delahunty and John Geraghty perhaps had an edge in this sector for Cullohill in the first period and others to do well were Joe Dollard, John Dunphy, Mick Bolger, Mick Dunphy, Pat Bolger, Liam Spencer and Jack Doran who had a big say in all three goals.
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown remained in contention for qualification for the closing stages of the S.H.C. when scoring a good victory over bottom of the table and pointless Cullohill in ideal conditions at Abbeyleix. Castletown were slow to start and conceded 2 goals early on which indicated they might be in trouble but they settled as the game progressed and by half time led by 2-6 to 2-4. Cullohill scored a point on the resumption but after this they were held scoreless until the last few minutes when they had a consolation goal. Meanwhile, Castletown were in control scoring some good points and playing well throughout the field. This was a fairly good performance by Castletown in a game played in brilliant sunshine. After a shakey start the Castletown full back line settled to playing well. The half back line of Bernie O' Keefe, Paddy Hegarty and Seamie Hyland played very well. The Castletown midfielders had the better of things in their sector. Michael O' Sullivan and Vinny Palmer were the best of the forwards.
Castletown Team; Cha Palmer, Mick Boyhan, Mick Peters, John Bergin, Bernie O' Keefe, Paddy Hegarty, Seamie Hyland, P.J. Mullaney (0-1, 65m), Gerry Phelan (0-1), Vinny Palmer (0-2), Jimmy Hanlon, Mick O' Sullivan (1-6), Oliver Dollard, Con Wall (0-5), Paul Dollard (1-0)

Rosenallis 3-8 Castletown 1-2
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown chances of qualifying for the semi finals of the J.F. League suffered a severe set back when losing by 12 points to a much sharper and more skillful Rosenallis side. Castletown having defeated Trumera and St. Manmans had the maximum points in their group but they were well defeated in this their third game. Rosenallis opened the scoring with a point but shortly after Seán Mullaney equalised for Castletown but this was their only score of the the first half while Rosenallis had a total of 3-4. Two of these goals were the result of uncharacteristic mistakes by goalkeeper Pat Delaney who misjudged dropping balls. Castletown kicked much better in the 2nd half and a goal and a point by Gerry Gaughan raised hopes of a come back but this did not come and Rosenallis had 4 good second half points to give them a 12 point victory margin. Gerry Gaughan, John Bergin, Paul Fitzpatrick and Tommy Deegan were best for Castletown.
Castletown Team; Patrick Delaney, Ger Tynan, John Bergin, Noel Phelan (Paddock), Paul Fitzpatrick, Gerry Gaughan (1-1), Bill Delaney, Seán Mullaney (0-1), P.J. Mullaney, Mick O' Sullivan, Tom Deegan, Vinny Palmer, Vivian Cahill, Paddy Hegarty, P.J. Dunne

Senior Hurling Championship 3/7/83
Clonad 1-9 Castletown 1-6
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown virtually ruled out their chances of qualifying for the latter stages of the S.H.C. when going down by 3 points to Clonad in ideal conditions and brilliant sunshine in Portlaoise. Castletown lined out with their 3rd choice goalkeeper Seamus Bergin (Cha Palmer- sick and Joe Phelan - not attending). Mick Peters did not attend either but Joe Dollard was back after a one month suspension. Oliver Dollard opened the scoring with a point but this was the only occasion Castletown led as Clonad equalised shortly after and goaled to give them the lead. By half time Castletown had a 0-3 to 1-5 deficit to pull back. A point by Con Wall and a great goal by Oliver Dollard after good work by the forwards plus a point from a Mick O' Sullivan free got Castletown back on level terms. Clonad went back ahead with a point shortly afterwards.
Then an incident around the Castletown goals seemed to upset Castletown's rhythm. Seamus Bergin was knocked out after saving and a long delay followed. Gerry Gaughan replaced him in goals and the game recommenced. Clonad and Castletown had an exchange of points but then Clonad had 2 further points without reply and the referee blew full time having added on about 3 minutes, while the stoppages took about 10 minutes.
And so Castletown left the field disappointed with the result of the match which made their chances of qualification very very slim indeed. However, Seamus Bergin in goals, the full back line, Seamus Hyland, Paddy Hegarty and especially Gerry Phelan who was outstanding could not be blamed for this defeat.
Castletown Team; Seamus Bergin, Mick Boyhan, John Bergin, Tom Deegan, Paddy Hegarty, Joe Dollard, Seamie Hyland, P.J. Mullaney, Gerry Phelan, Bernie O' Keefe, Con Wall (0-2), Mick O' Sullivan (0-2f), Vinny Palmer (0-1), Oliver Dollard (1-1), Paul Dollard

Junior Football League 4/7/83
Ballyfin 2-5 Castletown 1-3
From Secretary's Notes
Another disastrous first half performance was the main factor in Castletown's defeat by Ballyfin in their 4th game of the Junior Football League. This defeat put an end to any hopes Castletown might have had of qualifying for the advanced stages of this competition. As against Rosenallis a week ago, Castletown who were short many regulars began very badly. Ballyfin commenced the game with 13 men and played with only 14 men for most of the first half, but it was during this period that they scored 2-4, all but one of their total. During the first half Castletown's extra men caused utter confusion and Ballyfin had the defence in disarray on numerous occasions. Castletown failed to score in the opening half and so faced a daunting task in the second period. They took up the challenge and 3 points followed by a Gerry Gaughan goal from a penalty reduced the deficit to 4 points.
With 15 men each in the 2nd half the defence tightened considerably and held the opposition to one point and while Ballyfin went on to win they held out due to great goalkeeping and defensive work in the second half when their goal area was besieged by the Castletown attack.
John Bergin had an outstanding game at full back. Gerry Gaughan and Bernie O' Keefe along with Tommy Deegan also played very well but generally the forward line was the weaker area of the team.
Castletown Team; Larry Dunne, Paddy Hegarty, John Bergin, Bill Delaney, Paul Fitzpatrick, Gerry Gaughan (1-2), Seán Mullaney, P.J. Mullaney, Bernie O' Keefe (0-1), Joe Dollard, Tommy Deegan, Mick Cuddy, Noel Phelan, Patrick Delaney, Dan Phelan

Abbeyleix 3-20 Castletown 1-7
From Leinster Express
Abbeyleix far too strong for Castletown
Abbeyleix had no trouble in this Laois SHC tie on Sunday last played in Mountrath. They were allowed score almost at will and their defence were always on top of a poor and dispirited Castletown attack.
That Castletown failed until the twentieth minute of the first half to score speaks volumes for their ineptitude in most sectors of the field. However, Abbeyleix scored in the second minute when Eugene Fennelly pointed.
Two minutes later Joe Lalor had another point and the former put his side three up after ten minutes. Christy Dunphy pointed two minutes later and two points in as many minutes from Jim Ring put Abbeyleix six points up as Castletown had yet to score by the fifteenth minute.
Castletown opened their account after twenty minutes when Olly Dollard doubled on a Ger Phelan cross to score a great goal. However, it failed to inspire the losers and points from Joe Lalor, Johnny Keegan and two from Eugene Fennelly left the winners 1-12 to 1-0 up at the interval.
The pattern was repeated in the second period as it once again took the losers a full twenty minutes to add to their account. Dunphy pointed in the second minute for Abbeyleix as they went on a scoring spree that yielded 2-6 in those first twenty minutes.
A Tom Keegan goal signalled the opening of the proverbial floodgates in the fifth minute and a point by Eugene Fennelly followed almost immediately. Eugene Hearns got among the scorers in the seventh minute when he pointed from play and Dunphy once again pointed a minute later. Jim Ring raised a white flag soon after. Christy Dunphy shot a goal in the fifteenth minute and two points from Eugene Fennelly followed before the losers got their first score of second half.
The losers first score of that disastrous second period came from Con Wall who pointed a free. There followed a like score from a similar position two minutes later. Pat Fennelly closed the winners account five minutes from time with a point, but Con Wall had the last say when he pointed a penalty two minutes before the final whistle.
Best for the winners were goalie Kevin Fennelly, Bill Phelan, Martin Fitzpatrick and Richie Dunne in defence. Pat and Eugene Fennelly did well at midfield. Tom Keegan, Christy Dunphy and Eugene Hearns were most dangerous up front.
Castletown were best served by Cha Palmer in goals, Bernie Ferns, Seamie Hyland and G Delaney in defence. P.J. Mullaney did well at midfield. In attack only Mick O' Sullivan and Joe Dollard when switched from defence many any impression.
From Secretary's Notes
The last game for Castletown in the S.H.C. was a mere formality as Castletown had lost all chance of qualifying for the knock out stages. Abbeyleix had a facile victory.

Shanahoe Junior Hurling Tournament 2/9/83
Castletown v Park/Ratheniska
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown with a less than full strength team failed in this first round match of the Shanahoe Tournament played in atrocious conditions at Shanahoe. For a long time it seemed as if this game would not be played due to the heavy downpour of rain and when it did start Castletown could only muster 14 players. Pat Phelan made up the full outfit after half time but in a hard fough closely contested game Ratheniska repeated their earlier J.H.L. result over Castletown. _______ Cuddy probably became the youngest ever player to play for Castletown in a competitive Junior Hurling game. He lined out in goals.

Slieve Bloom Senior Hurling Tournament 16/10/83
Castletown v Colt
From Secretary's Notes
Castletown with an understrength team defeated Colt by a narrow margin in the first round of the Slieve Bloom Hurling Tournament. Castletown owed their victory to outstanding displays by Joe Dollard and Gerry Phelan, whom Colt could not match. The game was played in deplorable conditions with a strong gale all through and after a heavy downpour. Castletown had the better of things for most of the game but had to resist heavy pressure in the second half to hold on for a deserved win.
