Secretary's Report 1984
It gives me great pleasure to present this, my third report as Secretary, at Castletown GAA Club's 11th Annual General Meeting and to welcome you all here tonight.
Although I have not the privilege of congratulating any of our teams on winning any championships or tournaments in the centenary year we should not be disheartened.
Senior Hurling:
Like in previous years we got away to a good start and as the championship progressed we started to falter like the two previous years. To my belief, this occurs through poor training, team effort and dedication and building up enough confidence in the team. If we are to win the Senior Championship in 1985 this must change.
Junior Hurling:
Again our Junior Hurling team played well at the beginning of the league and the championship but fell away when the effort was needed to progress into the latter stages if the competitions. There is lots of promise in our Junior team as the majority of them are very young.
Under 21 Hurling:
We thought we should have done well with the U21 team this year but this was short lived. When we went to the Laois Hurling Board Convention we learned that the Slieve Bloom players had elected to play with Mountrath and this left us with no team. Our players then joined Camross and were beaten in the first round by Rathdowney.
Football:
Our footballers performed very well in the championship and with a bit more luck could have went further. Maybe 1985 will bring a bit more success.
Juvenile:
To the Juvenile Club I would like to congratulate them on winning the U16 Championship. It was a worthy achievement. It was the only success in Castletown in 1984. I would like to congratulate their Chairman and mentors for this victory and their hard work in general during the year - keep it up! Hopefully 1985 will bring more success.
Social and Financial:
Undoubtedly the social event of the year was Centenary Day. This started with mass at 11 O' Clock and a sermon about the achievements of the club over the past 100 years and what the club has done for the parish of Castletown. The game in the afternoon between married and singles was great and the long puck was won by Kieran Dunphy, with Oliver Dollard in second place. The day concluded with a lovely dinner and a social until midnight.
It was a great success, meeting players of the past and listening to all that happened over the years in our club. I would like to thank everybody for making the day and event one which we will never forget.
I would like to thank the ladies for cooking and serving a lovely meal on the day and also Seán Mullaney for all his hard work in setting up the hall with all of the medals and souvenirs of the past. Also to all those who sent in medals and trophies.
I thank also the De La Salle Brothers and Bro. Pius for the use of the hall and kitchen on that enjoyable day and everybody who helped in every way.
On the financial side, we ran ran a draw in which we made a slight profit. We also ran Senior and Junior Hurling Tournaments for the first time. The Junior Tournament was completed. The Senior Tournament will be completed when the season starts again. Revenue from the tournament kept the club afloat for the year. We also ran a very successful card drive in Mountrath and a couple of cabarets too.
Congratulations:
I would like to thank all our players who participated in our games during the year from Senior up to U21 for their help, without them we would have no club. I would like to thank our Chairman, Denis Wall, for all his help and also to our committee and selectors for their help and to Seán Brophy for supplying hurleys throughout the year and and also to our supporters for their support.
General Comment:
And so onto 1985. I hope the players and committee of this club make a greater effort. We can't expect to achieve success on the field without this. To everybody in our club I say work and train harder for the betterment of the club. With that in mind, we will have success in the not too distant future.
