Secretary's Report 2013
(As presented to AGM on 6/1/14)
It is my pleasure as Secretary of Castletown G.A.A. Club to present the Secretary’s report for 2013. This is the Club’s 40th A.G.M.
We had five teams compete in hurling competitions-Minor, U21, Junior B, Junior A & Senior. It was the most successful year to date with Slieve Bloom winning the Junior ‘B’ Championship and ACHL Division 3 & 4. The Senior team reached the semi-final of the ACHL Division 1.
It was also a very successful year on the football front with our ‘partners’ Slieve Bloom Castletown winning championship titles at Junior ‘B’, Under 21 ‘B’ and Minor ‘B’. I congratulate all involved in these successes.
Overall 2013 was a positive year for the club, despite our Senior team making no further inroads into the championship. Combining both clubs’ resources gives additional scope when preparing adult teams with a bigger pool of players. It is, however, time to examine the future direction of our current “arrangement” and a proposal in this regard will be put before today’s meeting.
I would like to thank all those who have participated in club activities and helped the club over the past year and the players for their efforts at all levels, minor U21, Junior and senior. I would also like to congratulate and thank all the players from the Club who represented Laois at county level- Paul Cuddy (Selector) at senior level, Patrick Phelan (Selector) and John Paul Bennett at under 21 level and Conor Phelan, Evan Cuddy and Ryan Mullaney at minor level.
The latter three in particular had an extremely successful year and enjoyed the support of the whole club and community as they helped Laois to record some excellent wins.
Minors
Our minors, though short on numbers, competed in the Minor ‘A’ league and championship this year. In the league we beat St Fintan’s Gaels in Shanahoe before losing to Portlaoise at home. This saw us miss out on a semi-final place.
The championship was knockout and Portlaoise were again the opponents at Shanahoe. In a very close fought encounter we came out defeated by two points and so the year ended.
A small number of challenge games were also played at this grade.
Considering the small pool of players and young age profile the team performed as well as could reasonably be expected. There is a larger number of players coming through in future years and with an U17 title won in late 2013 there is no reason why our minors can’t compete for a county title in 2014. I would like to thank Tom Dooley, Barry McKelvey & Tim Drea for managing and training the team and all the players who took part despite our limited resources.
U21
At U21 level we were drawn to play Clough Ballacolla in a quarter final. Once again the U21 championship was run on a knockout basis. The timing of this competition does not help matters given the large number of players that are away in college. Despite a good start the team fell away in the last quarter and suffered a bad defeat. While we will be strong enough to compete in ‘A’ competitions it will probably be a few years before we are realistically challenging for titles. I would like to thank James Hooban, P.J. Mullaney & Martin Lowry for preparing the team and all the players who took part.
In both these grades the most important thing is that Castletown Slieve Bloom continues to become more and more competitive in the ‘A’ grade. It is also vital that we put the needs of our own players above any short term gains in recruiting players from other isolated clubs. This will only lead to a falloff in our own playing numbers in the long-term. It has not worked in the past. With the excellent work being done at underage level, we should concentrate entirely and only on the players within our own parish, even if we are not good enough to win ‘A’ championships every year.
Also, while it is extremely difficult to organise, and certainly not a criticism of recent managements, these two teams do not spend enough time together before championship games and a change in approach is needed.
Junior B
The Junior B team had an excellent year, despite a very shaky start! In the first round of the league we received a walkover but the next day out, at the home of our old rivals Camross we had to give a very late walkover. For the next round against Abbeyleix a day of desperate phone calls by a handful of people ensured we had 15 present and despite a defeat the year was saved. From there things took off, and the league semi final v Clough Ballacolla and league final v Camross were both won in Borris in Ossory.
The championship campaign saw wins against Ballyfin and The Harps before beating Abbeyleix in the final.
A year that looked like ending in withdrawal from competition without pucking a single ball resulted in a double. Jack Peters captained the team to both victories. The Junior B team are currently preparing for Leinster quarter final v Gracefield from Offaly.
I would like to thank Joe Heffernan, Tony Delaney, Anthony Heffernan and Brendan Peters for managing the team.
Junior A
The Junior A team once again breezed through the league, winning 6 out of 7, losing to Portlaoise at home. The league final was won v Clough Ballacolla.
As with previous years this was the highlight of the year. A first round game v Mountrath was hardly a challenge and indeed many players were ‘rested’ for that win. A second round defeat to Portlaoise meant a quarter final tie with Clough Ballacolla and we were beaten well.
This competition has been there for the taking since we dropped back from intermediate for the 2007 championship. In that time we have lost 3 semi finals and 3 quarter finals. Each year we would have been one of the favourites to win the competition.
Despite many management combinations and an amalgamation along the way each year has started very well and ended disappointingly. As stated last year, this competition should have been secured at some stage since 2007, and particularly since the amalgamation with Slieve Bloom. Perhaps the meeting will be able to pinpoint why this has not happened?
I would like to thank David Cuddy, Mick Phelan & Joe Heffernan for managing and preparing the team.
Senior
Once again our seniors had a very mixed year. It was probably a reversal of previous years with a very good league campaign and a disappointing championship. The Palmer Cup returned to knockout and Camross beat us narrowly at Slieve Bloom. The reigning county champions Rathdowney Errill were beaten in the opening league, also at Slieve Bloom. The early rounds of the league were up and down, losing to Borris in Ossory Kilcotton, beating Camross away, losing at home to Clough Ballacolla before beating Ballinakill at home. This game was controversially recorded as a draw due to a ridiculous refereeing mistake. The Harps and Portlaoise were both beaten away from home in the final rounds and a semi final place was secured. We lost to Borris in Ossory Kilcotton after extra time in Rathdowney, but after a spirited performance.
Hopes were high leading into the championship opener with Rathdowney Errill but a flat performance resulted in defeat. Although we bounced back to beat The Harps and secure a quarter final spot, we fell apart in the second half against Portlaoise and the year ended disappointingly. I stated here last year that we would have to address our “slow starts” to the year, and while we did, the momentum did not carry through, and looking back things seemed to regress after the league semi final defeat.
I would like to thank Danny Reddin for training and managing the team, Padraig Cuddy and Philip Holmes for their hard work and Paul Cuddy for helping on the coaching side of things. Danny Reddin, in particular, deserves a huge amount of credit for the time, effort and personal application he brought to his role, having to work on a number of occasions in circumstances that no manager from within or outside the club should have to.
Membership
Memberships have held steady from 2012 and we had 116 members. We are extremely fortunate to have such a supportive membership community. The fruits of this are to be seen in our ability to commence a large development without the need for borrowing.
There continues to be difficulty with collecting memberships. This will be an ongoing problem as it clashes with the €130 county board tickets. The only solution is to encourage more people to pay by Standing Order, and a significant number “switched” during this year.
All the club membership promises were delivered with free admission to home league games, text updates for fixtures and results, Social Night for members, Club Merchandise and free draw for all Ireland tickets. I would like to thank all who worked to enlist members and who delivered on the membership commitments. 2014 will once again prove challenging in this regard.
The delivery of merchandise late in the year has attracted some comment and deserves discussion today.
Non payment of membership by players has almost entirely being eradicated and should be further clamped down. It is something that must not be tolerated.
I would also remind the meeting that only those who were members in 2013 will be entitled to vote on any matters that arise today.
Other Activities
We processed tickets for Laois Senior and Minor games during the year, making them available at a discounted rate to members, thanks to the Leinster Council. Thanks also to Liam Phelan of the Castletown Inn for organising and subsidising a bus to the Leinster Final.
Our Social Night was held on Saturday 27th July at Mountrath Golf Club, but was not well attended; perhaps the time of year needs to be changed? We held our race night on Sunday 4th August and it was well supported by most.
A 25 year reunion celebrating the 1988 minor championship win was also held in Mountrath Golf Club and by all accounts was very well organised and run.
Once again Tom Dooley and Richard Poole organised an Over 40s charity game on New Years Day V Camross. This year’s event was to be held in aid of the Stroke Rehabilitation Unit at Midlands General Hospital Portlaoise. Unfortunately the weather called a halt to this event. It is rescheduled at present for Sunday March 16th.
These events are important; particularly those which give something back to the community that supports us
Club Development
A year on from successfully obtaining a Sports Capital grant of €25,000 we are ready to begin work early in the New Year. Richard Poole, Tom Phelan and Padraig Cuddy were selected at last year’s AGM to put a plan in place and the fruits of this will be seen in 12 month’s time. Richard and Tom particularly, along with Michael Kelly, have put a lot of time into this and we can safely say that Castletown GAA will be getting a job well done, at a very good price.
With the pitch out of action for the majority of this season, it is a time when perhaps further development work could be carried out ahead of the pitch returning to use in 2015. This may include upgrades to our ball stops, fencing, scoreboard etc. Use of 2014 membership subscriptions and perhaps even some small scale borrowing is worthy of discussion.
Club Website
Having been mentioned almost annually at these meetings the club finally has a website up and running for the past number of months. It is a functional site but very basic and very amateur in comparison to other sites. There are probably many among our membership who would be capable of making great improvements to it. Nonetheless it is a means of communicating with members, supporters and interested parties at home and abroad. The history section in particular is a valuable resource. It is an important reflection of our history and achievements as well as acknowledging the many people who were involved in our club at various times. I would appeal to any of you with information to add to please do so.
Castletown & Slieve Bloom Amalgamation
As mentioned earlier, the “Steering Committee” involving 5 members from each club eventually came up with a proposal to put to both AGMs today. I look forward to hearing your views on this. It is my opinion that there is very little more we can give while the current arrangement remains in place. We are currently entrusted, by agreement from all sides, with running the hurling club for the entire parish.
Our own committee, at a series of meetings, strongly backed the idea of furthering this arrangement and the document you will be presented with was only agreed late in the year. In truth, the steering committee has not functioned well for a variety of reasons and if this type of group is going to continue there needs to be a change in approach.
It is important that those present express their views openly and honestly today on this matter. This is the only forum for it.
Some need to accept that change is sometimes necessary in order to progress.
Others need to realise that respecting history allows you to acknowledge what you stand for and what you have being doing well. In this regard we have been doing a lot well, for a long time.
Acknowledgements
I would like to compliment the Naomh Éamann Juvenile GAA Club on their continued good work and congratulate them on their many successes. These include championship successes at U13 and U17 and league success at U14. The U14s were narrowly beaten in the Championship final by Camross. They lost out to a late pointed free after a great comback.
Many people are continuing the proud tradition this club has of giving back of their time and long may it continue.
I wish to thank all those involved in Castletown GAA Club over the past year. The operation of the Club requires a lot of effort and owes to the hard work of my fellow officers and committee members. The committee worked extremely hard. The club is being run on a very small budget and all involved deserve credit for this. I would like to thank the officers and members of the Slieve Bloom Castletown Club for their help and co-operation during the year.
From a financial point of view I would like to thank all businesses and individuals who contributed in any way to the running of Castletown GAA in 2013.
2014 is a year in which team expenditure is likely to increase dramatically and it is important that a fair and sensible plan is put in place for this.
I would also like to thank the following:
Mick Cuddy for his work in mowing the field
Gerry Gaughan for all his work in marking and maintaining the field
Pat Phelan – Sale of Tipperary Draw tickets
Mary Hooban – Looking after jerseys
Jimmy Conroy – Physio
Liam Phelan & Tommy Ferns- Race Night
I wish to sympathise with all those who have suffered bereavements during the year.
Player Injury Scheme
I would appeal to players to bring themselves up to date with how the GAA Player Injury Scheme works. It is a very good system when players make the effort to provide all documentation that is asked of them. I believe it compares very favourably to what is available to players in other sports at this level.
I don’t feel that the club should bear any financial burden due to players not providing all of the documentation requested of them. In the past this has placed a large strain on the club.
2014
I feel the club can look forward to 2014 with optimism. A number of players came through in 2012 and 2013 and have acquitted themselves well on adult teams.
I would like to wish Damian Fox, and all those who take up positions, the best of luck in 2014 competitions. Our neighbours might just have shown the way with regard to what can be achieved when attitude and commitment are at the required level.
As a club it is important that we ensure that all of our members who take up positions, or are involved in any capacity, are treated with the respect and courtesy that their efforts deserve.
It is also worth considering whether our playing numbers in 2014 will require a 4th team? Are we going to be able to provide sufficient playing time to all of our playing members with just 3 teams?
Finally, I will not be staying on as Secretary of the club.
As I stated last year I don’t believe those still playing should fill such positions. It is likely to be two years before there is any major change of structure between ourselves and Slieve Bloom and now would be a good time for somebody else to fill this position.
I wish the Club every success in 2014 and beyond.
